The royal party had ended, but the night still danced with whispers of revelry as Sir Dave accompanied Prince Ares on the quiet walk back to the palace. Ares, his usually composed demeanor now softened by the effects of the night's libations, leaned heavily on Dave for support.
"Steady there, Your Highness," Dave said, his voice gentle yet tinged with concern. "We're almost to your chambers."
Ares chuckled, the sound echoing softly in the night air. "You're always there for me, Dave," he mused, his words slurring slightly. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Dave's heart skipped a beat at the sincerity in Ares' words, a bittersweet reminder of the love he dared not confess. He steadied Ares, guiding him through the moonlit courtyard with a tenderness born of unspoken longing.
As they reached the grand doors of the palace, Ares paused, his gaze drifting upwards to the star-strewn sky. "It's a beautiful night," he remarked, his voice wistful.
"It is indeed, Your Highness," Dave replied softly, his heart aching with the weight of unspoken words.
Ares turned to face Dave, his eyes searching his with an intensity that sent shivers down Dave's spine. "Dave," he began, his voice low and earnest. "There's something I've been meaning to tell you."
Dave's heart raced, anticipation and fear warring within him as he waited for Ares to continue.
"I know I can be... difficult at times," Ares admitted, his voice tinged with regret. "But you... you've always been there for me. You've been my rock, my constant in a world of uncertainty."
Dave's breath caught in his throat, his heart swelling with a love he dared not voice.
Ares reached out, his hand finding Dave's and intertwining their fingers together. "I don't say it enough, but... I appreciate you, Dave. More than you'll ever know."
Tears pricked at the corners of Dave's eyes as he gazed into Ares' eyes, the depth of his emotions threatening to spill forth in a torrent of unbridled longing.
Before Dave could muster the courage to speak, Ares leaned in, his lips brushing against Dave's in a tender, fleeting kiss. And in that moment, beneath the cloak of night and the shimmering light of the moon, Dave knew that his love for Ares was not in vain.
For in the silence of the night, amidst the echoes of whispered confessions, two hearts found solace in each other's embrace, bound together by a love that defied the confines of duty and expectation. And as they disappeared into the shadows of the palace, hand in hand, Dave knew that their love would endure, steadfast and true, for all eternity.
