The echoes of humiliation still reverberated in Dave's mind as he made his way through the dimly lit corridors of the palace. Each step felt heavier than the last, weighed down by the burden of rejection and scorn he had endured in the grand hall.
But despite the pain gnawing at his heart, Dave refused to succumb to despair. He was a knight, forged in the crucible of adversity, and he would not allow the cruelty of others to extinguish the flame of his spirit.
As he wandered the labyrinthine halls, lost in his thoughts, Dave's mind drifted back to the events that had led to his current predicament. The memory of Ares' drunken kiss still lingered in his mind, a bittersweet reminder of the love they had once shared.
And now, as he walked alone in the shadows of the palace, Dave couldn't help but wonder if it had all been for naught. Had their love been nothing but a fleeting illusion, a mirage destined to vanish at the first sign of adversity?
Lost in his thoughts, Dave didn't notice the figure lurking in the shadows until it was too late. Suddenly, a strong hand clamped down on his shoulder, spinning him around to face his assailant.
"Dave," a voice hissed, low and menacing. It was Prince Hector, Ares' brother, his face twisted into a sneer of contempt.
Dave bristled at the sight of him, his muscles tensing instinctively. "What do you want, Hector?" he growled, his voice edged with defiance.
Hector's lip curled in disgust as he regarded Dave with disdain. "I want you to leave my brother alone," he spat, his words dripping with venom. "You're nothing but a stain on our family's honor, a disgrace to everything we stand for."
Dave felt a surge of anger rise within him at Hector's words, but he quickly quelled it, refusing to give in to the other man's provocation. "I have no intention of causing your family any further distress," he replied evenly. "But I will not apologize for loving your brother, no matter what you may think of me.
Hector's eyes flashed with rage at Dave's defiance, his grip tightening on his shoulder. "You dare to speak to me in such a manner?" he seethed, his voice barely above a whisper. "You, a mere commoner, presume to challenge the authority of a prince?"
But before Dave could respond, a voice echoed through the corridor, cutting through the tension like a knife. "That's enough, Hector."
Both men turned to see King Eldarius striding towards them, his expression stern but not unkind. "Leave him be," he commanded, his voice brooking no argument. "We have more pressing matters to attend to than squabbling amongst ourselves."
Hector scowled at his father's rebuke, but he released his grip on Dave's shoulder and stepped back, his gaze burning with resentment. "As you wish, Father," he muttered through gritted teeth, before turning on his heel and stalking off into the shadows.
Alone once more, Dave felt a sense of relief wash over him at the king's intervention. Despite everything, King Eldarius had shown him kindness and understanding, a glimmer of hope in the darkness that threatened to consume him.
But as he watched the king disappear down the corridor, Dave couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal that gnawed at his heart. For if even the king, with all his wisdom and compassion, could not see the truth of his love for Ares, then what hope did he have of ever finding acceptance in this world?
With a heavy sigh, Dave continued on his journey through the palace, his steps heavy with the weight of uncertainty. For though he may have faced many trials and tribulations in his life as a knight, none had prepared him for the pain of loving someone who could never truly be his. And as the shadows closed in around him, Dave couldn't help but wonder if he would ever find the courage to face the darkness that lay ahead.
