The morning sun cast its golden rays over the kingdom of Asteria, painting the world in hues of warmth and promise. But for Sir Dave, the dawn brought no solace, no respite from the turmoil that churned within his heart.
The events of the previous night replayed in his mind like a cruel jest, teasing him with fleeting moments of bliss before plunging him into the depths of despair once more. He could still feel the ghost of Prince Ares' lips upon his own, a fleeting touch that had ignited a spark of hope within his soul.
But now, as he stood before Ares' chambers, his heart heavy with anticipation and fear, he knew that hope was but a fragile illusion, shattered by the harsh light of reality.
Summoning all his courage, Dave knocked softly on the door, his hand trembling with uncertainty. The sound echoed through the corridor, reverberating like a drumbeat in the stillness of the morning.
The door swung open to reveal Prince Ares, his expression cold and unreadable, a stark contrast to the warmth of the dawn outside. Dave's heart skipped a beat at the sight of him, his breath catching in his throat as he prepared to confront the truth that lay between them.
"Ares," Dave began, his voice faltering slightly as he met the prince's gaze. "We need to talk."
Ares' eyes narrowed, a flicker of annoyance crossing his features before he composed himself with regal indifference. "About what, exactly?" he replied, his tone laced with thinly veiled disdain.
Dave swallowed hard, steeling himself against the onslaught of emotions threatening to overwhelm him. "About last night," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "About what happened between us."
For a fleeting moment, Dave saw something flicker in Ares' eyes, a hint of vulnerability masked by a facade of arrogance. But before he could decipher the meaning behind those guarded depths, Ares' expression hardened once more, his features twisted into a sneer of contempt.
"Last night was a mistake," Ares spat, his words cutting through the air like a dagger to Dave's heart. "A moment of weakness brought on by too much wine and too little sense."
Dave felt as though the ground had dropped out from beneath him, leaving him suspended in a void of disbelief and betrayal. "But...but you kissed me," he stammered, his voice trembling with hurt and confusion. "You kissed me, Ares. You can't just pretend it never happened."
Ares scoffed, a bitter laugh escaping his lips as he looked down upon Dave with thinly veiled disgust. "Do you honestly think I would stoop so low as to entertain the affections of a lowly knight?" he spat, his words dripping with venom. "You are nothing but a servant, Dave, a mere pawn in the game of politics and power. And I will not be dragged down by your pathetic attempts at affection."
The words struck Dave like a physical blow, leaving him reeling with the force of their cruelty. He had hoped, dared to believe that Ares' kiss had meant something, that perhaps, just perhaps, his love was not in vain. But now, as he stood before the prince he had once idolized, he saw only the cold, unfeeling facade of a man consumed by his own ambition and pride.
Without another word, Ares slammed the door shut in Dave's face, leaving him standing alone in the corridor, his heart shattered into a thousand pieces. Tears welled in his eyes, but he refused to let them fall, refusing to give Ares the satisfaction of seeing him broken and defeated.
Turning away from the prince's chambers, Dave retreated into the shadows, his spirit battered but unbroken. For though Ares may have rejected him, cast him aside like a discarded toy, Dave knew that his love was worth more than the fleeting affections of a selfish prince.
And as he walked away from the echoes of betrayal, Dave vowed to rise above the pain, to forge his own path in a world ruled by love and compassion, not by the whims of kings and princes. For in the end, it was not the approval of others that mattered, but the strength of his own heart and the depth of his own convictions.
