The day of Dave's execution dawned gray and somber, the sky heavy with clouds that seemed to mirror the heaviness in the hearts of those gathered to witness the tragic event. In the courtyard of the palace, a crowd had gathered, their murmurs of anticipation mingling with the sound of distant thunder.
Dave stood stoically at the center of the courtyard, his hands bound behind his back, his eyes fixed on the horizon as he awaited the inevitable. Beside him stood the executioner, his grim expression a stark reminder of the fate that awaited him.
As the minutes ticked by, the tension in the air grew palpable, a silent undercurrent of grief and despair that hung over the gathered crowd like a shroud. And then, at long last, the sound of approaching footsteps heralded the arrival of King Eldarius and Queen Valerian, their faces drawn and weary as they took their places upon the dais overlooking the courtyard.
The king's voice rang out clear and solemn as he addressed the crowd, his words carrying the weight of authority as he pronounced judgment upon Dave for his crimes against the crown. And then, with a heavy heart, he gave the signal for the execution to commence.
The executioner stepped forward, his hands steady as he raised the gleaming blade high above his head, the metal glinting ominously in the dim light. Dave closed his eyes, a silent prayer upon his lips as he prepared to meet his fate.
But just as the blade began its downward descent, a sudden commotion broke out in the crowd, a flurry of movement and shouting that drew the attention of all who had gathered to witness the execution.
A figure burst through the crowd, pushing past the startled onlookers with determined urgency. It was Ares, his eyes wild with desperation as he raced forward, his voice ringing out clear and strong above the din.
"Stop!" he cried, his voice echoing through the courtyard like a clarion call. "Stop this madness at once!"
The executioner hesitated, the blade poised inches above Dave's neck as he turned to regard the prince with confusion and surprise. "Your Highness, you cannot interfere," he protested, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
But Ares would not be deterred. He stepped forward, his gaze fixed unwaveringly on Dave, his heart pounding in his chest as he fought to make himself heard above the chaos of the crowd.
"I love him," he declared, his voice ringing out clear and true. "I love him more than life itself, and I cannot stand by and watch as he is taken from me."
The crowd fell silent at Ares' words, the weight of his confession hanging heavy in the air like a lingering echo. And then, slowly, almost imperceptibly, a murmur of disbelief rose up from the assembled nobles and courtiers, spreading like wildfire through the courtyard as they struggled to comprehend the magnitude of what they had just witnessed.
King Eldarius regarded his son with a mixture of shock and dismay, his heart heavy with the weight of the impossible choice that lay before him. But then, slowly, a flicker of understanding passed across his features, a realization dawning in his eyes as he looked upon the love that shone bright and unwavering in Ares' gaze.
And in that moment, he knew what he must do.
"Stop the execution," he commanded, his voice ringing out clear and strong. "Release Dave from his bonds. From this day forth, he is free to go."
The crowd gasped un surprise, and even Hector and queen Valerian were shocked. The executioner sighed then unlocked Dave's hands and feet free from the chains. Dave was crying in joy and so was Ares. As soon as he got free, Dave ran towards Ares and pulled him into a deep hug. But the queen was still very angry at his husband...
