As the sun began to rise over the treehouse, everyone gathered in the treehouse, preparing for their journey. Mia packed the essentials she needed to used to survive the woods.
"Mamá, are you done packing?" called out Isabella as she surveyed her own belongings." I'm almost finished, Isabella," replied Mia, double-checking her supplies. "Are Mirabel and Dolorea ready?"
"We're all set, tía!" chimed in Mirabel and Dolores in unison, their excitement palpable." And where's Anne?" Mia asked, scanning the treehouse for her youngest daughter." I'm here, Mamá," Anne appeared from behind a stack of blankets, a mischievous grin playing on her lips.
With everyone accounted for, they descended from the treehouse to join the rest of the group. Noah, Agustín, and Rio stood by the foot of the tree, their packs slung over their shoulders." All set, ladies?" Noah asked, a reassuring smile on his face.
"We're ready," Isabella affirmed, her determination shining through. With a collective nod, they set off on their journey, determined to find their way back to their home village. Hours passed as they traversed through the dense forest, their footsteps echoing against the trees.
Eventually, they came to a halt, the imposing silhouette of a towering mountain looming before them. Noah took charge, guiding the group in setting up their tents for the night.
"Hopefully, we're in a safe area to sleep and that no animals tried to get us." He said as everyone started pulling or trying to set up their tents. Isabella, despite her lack of experience in such matters, enthusiastically followed Noah's guidance, clearly showing her determination to learn.
As the evening approached, the group gathered by the crackling fire. Anna and Mirabel were nodding off on a log. Agustín spotted them, scooped them up, and escorted them to their tents. Rio retired to his tent, while Dolores bunked with Isabella and Mia.
Mia, overwhelmed by a wave of nostalgia, quietly separated herself from the group, her heart burdened with memories of her home. Isabella, always observant, detected her mother's absence and stealthily followed her, intrigued by her mysterious behavior.
She quickly ducked out of sight when she spotted her mother by the river, then did the same when Noah came walking over to sit beside her. Their whispers filled the stillness of the night as they engaged in conversation.
"Everything okay?" he asked, and she nodded, accompanied by a smile. "I just really miss home," she shared. Noah understood her sentiment, as he too found himself longing for the warmth of his own home at times.
"We'll all go home one day," he said as they both quieted down and looked at the water." I hope so."
"Mamá, is everything okay?" Isabella's voice broke the stillness, startling Mia. "Mija, what are you doing here?" Mia asked, surprised to see her daughter.
"I saw you leave and wanted to make sure you were alright," Isabella explained, concern etched in her features. Mia sighed, her gaze drifting back to Noah. "We were just talking about home," she admitted, a wistful smile gracing her lips.
Noah nodded understandingly, his eyes reflecting a shared longing for the familiar comforts of home. "It must have been beautiful," he remarked, his voice tinged with curiosity.
"It was," Mia affirmed, a rush of memories flooding her mind. "The people, the scenery... everything was so vibrant and alive."
A tender silence enveloped them, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. For a fleeting moment, Mia allowed herself to entertain the possibility of something more with Noah, but the fear of heartbreak held her back.
"Time for my daughter and me to call it a night. We've got a big day ahead tomorrow," Mia stated as she rose from her seat and looked over at Noah. "Goodnight," she bid him farewell. Noah nodded, smiling to himself as he observed Mia and Isabella. He then headed back to his tent to get some rest.
The following day, they resumed their journey, the mountain peak growing ever closer with each passing step. And as they finally reached the summit, a sense of homecoming washed over them, as they looked at a mountain.
"Wait, is that it?" Anna asked, her eyes locked on the towering mountain. It had been a constant presence in their lives for years. "That's our home," Mia murmured, her voice trembling with tears streaming down her cheeks. "We're getting closer," Dolores stated, causing everyone to fix their gaze on the mountain, captivated by its grandeur.
"Why are you just standing there? Let's go!" Mirabel exclaimed, setting off towards the mountain at full speed. Although they were aware that it would be a few days before they reached their destination, they couldn't resist the urge to revel in the joy of being so close to home.
With a smirk, Isabella took off after her sister, with Anna and Dolores close behind. Mia and Agustín shared a smile before running after them. Noah followed suit, while Rio shook his head and followed the group.
