Author's Note: This is the second part of Birds of a Feather. This chapter is based off of some fanart I saw by novahee_ on Instagram. The original is of Alastor preening Lucifer's wings, but since this isn't a RadioApple book, you (the reader) will take Al's place :D

Reader POV

You rested your hand softly on his shoulder blade, gently rubbing your thumb across it as you reassured him.

"I promise I'll be gentle. Don't be afraid to speak up if I pull a feather too hard, or pinch you or anything. Anything you don't like, tell me. I won't repeat it."

You spoke to him sternly, making sure he understood that you would respect his boundaries. A common courtesy you wish had been extended to you in the past. You valued consent and communication. You needed him to know that before you proceeded.

"I will. I'll tell you if I don't like something." He replied quietly.

"Okay. Now, I think you may want to get a bit more comfortable, this will probably take a while and I don't think you'll feel very good if you slouch the whole time." You gently tapped the small of his back, nudging him to sit up straight. You laughed as he jolted upright and looked away, smiling embarrassedly.

"Why don't you lay on the edge of the bed, I'll sit next to you."

He got up slowly and shifted to the edge of his bed, laying down hesitantly, but following your suggestion. He crossed his arms and laid his head on them, as he sprawled out on his stomach. His wings flopped gently across him, the first one landing in your lap.

"Are you comfortable? I'm going to start now." You asked him as he settled in.

"Yes, I'm ready." He replied, his voice muffled from his head being tucked into his arms.

"Let me know if you need a break or anything. Like I said, with three sets of wings, this will most likely take a while. I'll be surprised if we get it all done today.

You watched as he nodded gently. You began running your fingers through the feathers at the base of his wings, avoiding the pin feathers, which were just coming in. You didn't want to scare him off by going for his most sensitive feathers right away.

Preening was quite the task, and bird or creature with feathers tends to do it themselves. However when an avian is depressed, they are likely to stop. It was quite sad to see his underlying feathers in such rough shape from the long time he spent ignoring them. You stroked them softly, removing bits of dust and grime, fluffing them out gently.

As you moved quickly from feather to feather you felt him melt under your touch. He seemed so relaxed, sometimes letting out a small noise to let you know you touched a sensitive feather, but other than that it seemed like he was going to fall asleep.

Lucifer's POV

Y/N had me lay on my stomach after giving me a pep talk and a mini speech about boundaries. I had never been told by anyone that I was allowed to have them. Angels in heaven only existed to serve God, and we all know what happened when I formed an opinion. I never known such kindness, even from my ex-wife. I wanted to cry at that though, but I didn't want to scare Y/N into stopping. I really needed this, and I was so lucky they offered it.

They gently began preening the base of my first wing. I had never felt such a gentle touch. They moved quickly, but with such precision. I was so surprised at how good it felt. It was such a relieving feeling, it made me feel loved.

Their quick fingers gently touched a couple of pin feathers, once or twice. I did as they said and signaled that I didn't like that. I didn't speak, but I twitched my wing the tiniest bit and made a whiny sound which was actually quite embarrassing. I felt my cheeks heat up from said embarrassment, but I just as quickly relaxed again when they moved on without commenting on the noise I made.

They got into a rhythm as they worked on, and finished, preening my first wing. They sighed happily and patted my back gently to signal that they were moving onto the next one. I sighed as well, also very happy. I felt so grateful.

Third Person POV

Not many words were spoken as Y/N worked diligently. Time trickled by the same way dew dripped off of leaves the morning after a storm. It wasn't bad silence. They two of them enjoyed the time they spent together. They enjoyed the peace and quiet.

It was only the two of them in this room. No responsibilities, no chaos. They would occasionally hear a distant scream, screech, or car horn, but it couldn't get to them in this room. It was lovely to just have the time to be. To be loving, and to be loved. To be giving, and to be accepted. To be adoring, and to be treasured.

It was a beautiful moment, it wasn't fleeting either. It lasted a while, Y/N ran their fingers through Lucifer's wings for what seemed like hours. Their hands cramped as they continued. They finished the sixth wing before realizing Lucifer was asleep, and had been for a while. With tired hands and a glance at the clock, which now said an ungodly nighttime hour, Y/N laid down on the opposite end of the bed, falling asleep almost immediately.
