Chapter 06
Win
—————
After participating and winning the Quiz Bee, I trained for the upcoming DSPC or Division Schools Press Conference.
I prepared myself for the worst. DSPC gathered not only journalists— but the best journalists at every school. I can only participate here and represent our school because I won CPAPS last time. I don't know if I can win here again.
"You can participate at RSPC if you earn third place to first place. Ibig sabihin, tatlo lang ang p'wedeng sumali kada category. And each school can only participate once in each category which means we only have one chance. You are the only chance to take the school to RSPC,"
I bit my lower lip as I listened to Miss Nepumoceno. Today is the day of DSPC. We were gathered outside of our school van. I wasn't that nervous when we were on our way here, but now that we're at the school where the event is being held, I could feel my cold hands trembling.
Sumali lang ako rito for Jericho, but hell! I still want to do my best!
I know for sure na naka-tsamba lang ako sa CPAPS last time. I wasn't even that satisfied with my article at that time, so when I heard that I won, I was perplexed. Like, how did I win with that kind of article? I, the creator itself, don't like it!
And so I thought about it. Maybe they don't have a choice. Like, it's the only article that can take up the first place in Campus Journalism.
But if that's the case, doesn't that mean I actually deserve to win?
A lot of things ran in my head because of that. I think it's only because of nervousness for the DSPC. I mean, this is DSPC! Unlike CPAPS, I would be competing against students from public schools, too.
They are monsters, I heard— especially Jericho's school. I heard they're the best Campus journalist among all the participants here. Their school has its own building for Campus Journalism unlike us which only has a room.
That only shows our differences— that whole building might meant their skills: they're massive compared to a room like ours.
"Kahit 'di na 'ko makapasok sa RSPC, makapag-place lang ako rito, okay na, e," wika ni Gino habang kinakain ang dala niyang biscuit. "Kinakabahan ako, tang ina,"
"You've been doing this for years, Gino," I reminded him.
"E, ano naman? Gano'n pa rin 'yon!" He replied, frowning. "Sana makapasok ako sa RSPC,"
I winced at the pace of his mind. Earlier, he was okay with placing only, but now, he wants to participate at RSPC. Hindi ko na talaga maintindihan.
"News Writers, kindly get in line, following the instructors,"
Upon hearing the announcement, I stood. I waved my hands at Gino who only mouthed me a good luck with a tap on my back. My club adviser encouraged me with a smile before I finally departed my ways from them.
I bit my lower lip as I gripped the strap of my tote bag, feeling absolutely nervous. The line was long compared to the other categories. I had an idea why— news writing is the easiest among of all the categories, they said. I could agree, but right now, I don't think that I can.
I was busy trying to calm my nerves down by playing with my fingers when I spotted someone. I blinked when I saw him smiling at me while waving his hands.
