The evening sun cast its golden glow over the streets as we drove to Bill and Tom's house. There was a slight tension in the car, especially because we didn't know how Simone, the mother of the twins, would react to our news. I took Bill's hand and gave him a reassuring smile. He nodded at me, a mix of nervousness and determination in his eyes.
Upon arrival, Bill opened the door and I followed him inside. The familiar scent of the house enveloped me; it felt like a second home after the time I had spent here before. Simone came into the hallway, her face lighting up at the sight of her sons. "Bill, Tom!" she exclaimed and hugged them tightly. Her eyes then turned to me, and she opened her arms for a hug. "Elise, it's always nice to see you again."
I hugged her tightly. "Thank you, Simone. It's also nice to see you again."
"Sit down, sit down," said Simone as she led us to the living room. A cozy atmosphere filled the room, and the smell of flowers and candles added a warm touch to the surroundings. We sat down on the comfortable couch, and Tom served us glasses of wine.
Simone looked at us with a friendly smile as she asked, "Have you eaten yet?" "No, not yet. We haven't had time to eat anything," Tom answered before we could say anything. Simone smiled understandingly and hurried to the kitchen. She came back with three steaming plates of quiche. Tom immediately pounced on them like a hungry wolf, stuffing his mouth with vegetable tart as if he hadn't eaten for days. Bill and I exchanged a smile before we started eating, albeit with a little more restraint than Tom.
As we enjoyed the savory pie, Simone steered the conversation back on track. "So tell me, what's been going on?" She looked at us curiously, waiting for clarification.
Tom, with his mouth full of vegetable tart, began to speak. "Something about a spark at the gala," he mumbled between bites. Bill shot him a warning glance. "Can we tell our story ourselves, please?" Bill hissed, while Simone nodded and looked at both of us.
Bill took my hand, his fingers intertwined with mine, and with a gentle smile, he began to tell our fabricated story. His eyes, filled with love and sincerity, looked directly into mine as he spoke. "At the gala," he began in a thoughtful tone, "I saw Elise on the dance floor. She was enchanting, radiant. It seemed like the whole world around her faded away, and there was only her, surrounded by the music and the magic of the moment. And there, in the midst of the dancing crowd, the spark reignited." His words were infused with emotion, and as he spoke, he looked deep into my eyes, as if reliving the enchanting night. His hand held mine, and I felt the warmth of his touch, a reassuring sign of the sincerity of his feelings. "It was inevitable," he continued. "We couldn't ignore our feelings any longer. The spark between us had come back to life, stronger than ever before." Simone sat on the edge of her seat, her gaze full of empathy. She understood the complexity of human emotions and the unpredictability of love. "It's certainly not proper how you've acted towards Alissa," she remarked after Bill's explanation. Her voice was soft, but there was a hint of stern concern, like a mother admonishing her children. Bill nodded in agreement, his face contorted with a mixture of regret and genuine love. "We never intended to hurt Alissa," he added, his gaze filled with remorse. "But sometimes feelings cannot be controlled. We couldn't deny what was growing between us, and we had to be honest with ourselves." "I always knew that my son's feelings for you, Elise, never went away," Simone addressed me now, her eyes full of loving wisdom. She got up from her chair and came over to me. "I am so happy that you two have found each other again." Simone's voice trembled with genuine joy. She hugged me tightly, her hands resting comfortingly on my back. "You are like a daughter to me," she whispered, and her words penetrated to the deepest fibers of my soul. "Welcome back."
Tom interjected with a slight sigh. "Pfff, all this romantic nonsense," he muttered with a playful twinkle in his eyes. Simone smiled at her son and resumed her seat. Tom, always seeking humor, quickly added, "Yeah, and they even survived despite my attempts to undermine their love." "How are things between you and Elise? Have you patched things up?" Simone asked, her attention now on Tom. He casually draped an arm around my shoulder and took a sip of his wine before answering. "Of course," he said with a wink at me. "We had a good talk, and Elise is really like a sister to me." I smiled gratefully at Tom. He understood the game and played along perfectly. Simone seemed satisfied with the news. "Yes," I added, "Tom and I are getting along well again." Simone nodded, grateful for the restored harmony. "Then we're a happy family again," she said with a warm smile.
Simone looked at us alternately as she asked the question. "Would you like to come for dinner tomorrow?" But before I could answer, Bill shook his head resolutely. "No, tomorrow we have to stay longer in the studio because we're behind schedule," he declared firmly. Tom seized the opportunity to complain a little. "All Georg's fault," he said with a dramatic sigh. "If he hadn't had to leave early for his date, we wouldn't have to work overtime tomorrow." Bill rolled his eyes and threw the ball back, "Tom, that's not true at all. You were the only one who had no plans for tonight." Tom began to defend himself, "Uh, excuse me. I put my plans aside for you guys." He seemed pleased with his retort, but Bill didn't let up. "Because of you, I can't even sit in our new couch anymore." Simone, tired of the bickering, turned to me. "If you'd like, you're welcome to come for dinner tomorrow," her friendly invitation brought a smile to my face, and I thanked her. "I'd love to, Simone. I'm looking forward to it," I replied politely.
