Bright Side

Astrid pulled her hood over her head in the rain. It was a cold night. It was an empty night. Usually, there would be people roaming the streets, trying to calm the dragons. But now? Now they were gone. The people off the streets, the dragons off Berk. She didn't have the feeling of protection that the Deadly Nadder behind her used to give. Now Stormfly was gone. So was Toothless. And Hookfang and Barf and Belch, along with Fishmeat and Meatlug, Grump, Skullchrusher, and Cloudjumper. They were all gone. Not a trace of them left behind. Not a claw, not a tooth, not a scale. Astrid stopped to examine a set of pawprints before they were washed away. They belonged to the ever famous, ever loyal, ever amazing Toothless. She smiled slightly.

Now, there was a bright side to this day. It was the eve of her wedding day. The day she would marry the chief of Berk. The one legged dork she had come to love. She smiled more. That was a day she looked forward to. She quickened her pace to her destination.

Hiccup spun his charcoal pencil in his hand. He was alone. His house was full of nothing. Not a single fleeting memory of his best bud. Tears welled up in his eyes. He cried until he heard a knock on his door. He wiped his tears and, with as much confidence as he could muster, opened the door. He relaxed upon seeing his betrothed, his beloved, standing before him. "M'lady," he greeted, stepping to the side so she could enter his home. Astrid stepped inside, removing her hood and shivering from the bitter cold. She turned to Hiccup and noticed his moist eyes. She frowned. "What's wrong, Babe?" He breathed shakily. "Nothing, I just... I just miss him, you know?" Astrid nodded. "I know."

Hiccup sat down on his bed, burying his face in his hands. Astrid sat next to him. She rubbed his back. "It's alright. We all miss them." Hiccup could hardly hold back his tears anymore. "Six years," he sighed sadly. "Six years, Astrid. You can't let somebody go that fast. Not after that long." Astrid leaned on his shoulder. "Twenty years," she mumbled. "Twenty years, you knew your father. But you let him go. Right?" Hiccup breathed deeply. "No. No, I didn't. I never let him go, and I'll never let..." He couldn't finish his sentence. "You'll never let Toothless go," Astrid concluded. Hiccup nodded, sobbing harder. Astrid felt tears build in front of her eyes. "It's alright. It's okay," she whispered, hugging Hiccup from the side. The lump in his throat would not allow Hiccup to muster words. He could speak in only sobs. Astrid kissed Hiccup lightly on his cheek. He chuckled a little.

"You always know how to cheer me up," Hiccup laughed. Astrid smiled. After that, it was quiet. Nothing but the sound of steady, content breathing.

Hiccup opened his eyes as the first rays of sunlight shone through his window. He roused Astrid. She groaned in response. "It's a big day," Hiccup said in a sing-song tone. "Big day, small day, potato, potahto. Let me sleep," Astrid muttered. Still, she rolled over and snuggled into Hiccup's chest. "That's not sleeping," Hiccup teased. Astrid glared at him. He smiled. "Okay, alright, fine. Sleep in. Not like I can stop you now." Astrid grinned, nuzzling her head into Hiccup's chest once again. Hiccup kissed the top of her head, an action she had grown to love. Astrid's eyes shot open as she realized what day it was. "Wait, what were you saying about a big day earlier?" Hiccup chuckled and pointed to the calender on his wall. Astrid studied the days, then frantically scrambled out of bed. Hiccup laughed. "Okay, okay! Hold on!" He stood and clipped his prosthetic leg into place.

Astrid dashed through the streets as fast as she could to her house. Finally, she made it. Hiccup ran as fast as a metal replacement of a leg would allow. "Hold on!" he shouted. Astrid did not wait. She was going to be ready for this wedding three hours before it started. Hiccup sighed. When he finally reached her door and knocked, she answered in her wedding dress. Hiccup blushed slightly, smiling. "You're gonna get it dirty," he warned. She shrugged. Hiccup shook his head and pulled her in for a kiss, twirling her as he did. Astrid giggled. Hiccup smiled at the love of his life. "What ever happened to 'We're no where near ready for that'? Hmm?" Astrid chuckled. "Oh, shut up," she sighed, kissing him again.
