CHASE
Even though my mind kept drifting off every now and then to certain events of the day while I remained seated in the restaurant Sophie picked for us to meet this evening following my request for that, since I finally agreed to meet, I tried my best to pay attention to what she was saying, hoping all of this could be over soon.
Speaking of one of such event of the day that which I found myself suddenly thinking about since it happened, was how I had stepped foot inside the company underground parking lot when I needed to leave the company for a while towards the afternoon and had heard a part of the conversation, Evelyn, was having on the phone with someone since she was walking ahead of me.
...Again, please do not call me while I'm at work. You will only get me in trouble this way.
She had said that in a hushed tone, but I had heard her anyway.
I told myself she might just be having an harmless conversation with a friend or just possibly anyone, but the way she had abruptly hung up the instant she became aware of my presence behind her, seeming a little bit tense as well when she had turned around to face me was making me think otherwise now.
At the same time, I tried to convince myself that maybe I was reading too much into what happened, but either way, I thought I had better keep a close eye on her and see what she was up to. I have always trusted my hunches if it was telling me something was wrong, and this time was not going to be different.
Regarding the food that was before me, although I had no appetite, the fact that their food here was surprisingly nice made me go ahead and take more bite than I intended to.
"Pretty and nice- You know that's a rare combination to come by with people these days. You're really lucky to have a sister who possesses those two qualities."
I knew she was talking about Enid.
Since we got here, Sophie had been making small talks and I was just about to tell her to get right to the reason why she wanted us to meet, when casually glancing sideways, I caught sight of a very familiar figure at a distance from where we were.
I could only see the person's side view, but I knew it was Enid right away.
Seeing how her steps were somehow hurried, I could tell that she must have spotted us as well and was trying to avoid me. I noticed also, the lady who was with her. I could tell that she must be the friend Enid had told me about in the office this afternoon.
I tore my gaze away from where they were to focus back on the food before me.
"Chase?"
I looked up at Sophie, who all but sighed, making me realise only then that she must have said something to me earlier, but since I got carried away, I had no idea what it was.
"I..." She drew in a sharp breath before going ahead to drop her cutleries. "Can't you just let us get back together? Things might work out this time, and you might actually end up developing feelings for me as well." Her voice broke a little towards the end of her sentence.
I didn't feel like taking any more bite, so I had dropped my cutleries as well, "Why would you want to get back together with someone who's not willing to get back with you? Can't you see you're only hurting yourself while you continue to do this?" I had my voice slightly raised.
She looked down and was silent for a while. When she eventually looked up, there was a lone tear gliding freely down her cheek that which caused me to feel guilt, knowing I was the reason for that, "I'm in love with you, that's why. I've tried, believe me, but I can't stop thinking about you."
