ENID

I adjusted in my seat to face her, "What's gotten into you lately? Are you even the same Evelyn that I know?" I blurted just as Dan started the car to take us to work.

Before I could leave the house, Evelyn had asked me if I could give her a ride to work in my car. She even said please. It was the same thing yesterday. I thought that was weird. I've known her for a long time and I'd never heard her say please for once.

"What are you talking about?" She queried as she applied her lipstick, a nude pink color, while staring in a portable flip mirror.

"Until yesterday, I thought please and thank you doesn't exist in your dictionary. Also, you smile more often now," I stated.

Done, she put away her lipstick and mirror into her bag and shrugged, "People change, I guess,"

"Oh my god!" I let out a small gasp, "Are you dying? Usually, people change when they're about to die, you know." I joked, mainly to annoy her.

The expression on her face slowly changed at my words. Sniffling, she went ahead to cover her face with her palms.

"What? You're scaring me. Is what I-I said true?" I stammered. "I was only joking, though."

She sniffled again, "What do I do, Enid? I'm seriously ill," She cried. "And, the doctor told me that I have only one..."

I gasped in terror, "One what? Month or year?"

"One hundred years to live," She removed her palms from her face and burst into laughter.

"What was that about? You scared me." I felt like smacking her on the head only if I could have my way.

"Well, you called for it." She scoffed.

At that moment, I realized how Chase must have felt too when I had tricked him the other day.

"Don't ever talk to me again." I adjusted in my seat to look straight ahead.

We soon arrived at the company. Not saying a word to Evelyn still, I picked up my bag and got out of the car.

"So now you're not going to speak to me anymore?" She asked just as we were about to reach the entry.

I didn't say anything.

"Okay, I'm sorry."

Astounded, I abruptly stopped in my tracks, "You even say sorry now too,"

"This is definitely not the first time that I'd be saying sorry," She argued, walking ahead of me this time, probably to avoid having to talk to me any further.

"It is." I argued back, unrelenting.

"Is that not... Chase," Evelyn called out a short while later. I looked ahead to see that it was really Chase, who was standing before the elevator.

He must have heard her as he had turned around to face our direction. Feeling his eyes on us, I suddenly felt uneasy, maybe because I was just seeing him since yesterday when we last spoke on the phone concerning that night.

At the same time, I remembered that we had both decided to forgive ourselves and put the past behind us.

I clucked my tongue, "She's totally smitten! Shouldn't she at least slow down a bit," I muttered as I watched Evelyn, who was beginning to walk at a fast pace.

"Isn't it such a beautiful morning? I hope you had a good night rest?" Evelyn asked Chase on getting to where he was while I tried to catch up to join them.
