In the early morning, I was awoken by Susannah who told me to get dressed into my ball outfit and look pretty for the portrait she wanted to paint of me. If it was anyone else, I would have pulled my duvet over my head and played dead, but since it's for Susannah, I made an exception.

She wanted to paint me when the morning light hit my face just right.

"I'm nearly done," she said.

"Take your time, Aunt Susie," I said from my stool, "if you're gonna wake me up before 7am, this picture has to be your best."

"Only for you, my dear. How is being a debutante?"

"You know, it's not as bad as the boys made it out to be. It's more than just rich girls with expensive tastes, it's taught me how to come out of my shell and be social. If it wasn't for the debutante, I wouldn't have done that fundraising concert."

Susannah smiled, "which you were unbelievable in. I remember the shows you used to put on for us after dinner. You'd even got Josie to join in when she was two."

"She still can't get the steps right," I commented.

"You've blossomed into this beautiful, confident young woman with so much talent," she said focusing on her painting.

"Thanks, Aunt Susie."

After some silence she said, "be honest with me, did I pressure you into being a debutante?"

"Huh?"

"Did I force you into it? If I did, I'm sorry-"

"Woah, Aunt Susie, stop. You didn't pressure or force me into it. Where did you get that from?"

"Laurel insists this isn't Belly's thing and protests about it all the time, your mom hasn't said anything, but maybe she feels the same way too."

"My mum said it was a great idea, said it would push me to be more open, learn how to make new friends and stuff, and I agree. I've made friends with girls I would walk straight past in the streets, I got some new dresses and shoes," she laughed when I said that, "but mostly, I discovered a social side I didn't think I had. If you never encouraged it, my summer would be very different. So, thank you, for being my cheerleader."

She awed and made her way round the canvas to hug me. "I will always be your cheerleader, even when I'm not around, you will feel my energy flow through the air, then enter your body and right to your heart. All because I love you." My eyes started to water and a few tears rolled down my cheeks.

"Oh sweetheart," she said wiping away my tears, "don't cry."

"Sorry," I sniffled, "you just mean so much to me. I can't imagine my life without you."

Susannah's eyes glossed over with emotion and gently cupped my cheeks, "No matter what, I'll be here for you."
