I.woke up early and headed down to the beach with my guitar and song book. I was finishing my song about Susannah, it came together the night of the deb-ball.

With a final strum of the guitar and finished the last note.

"That sounded amazing." I jumped at the voice and turned to see Conrad standing behind me. "Sorry, I-uh, didn't mean to scare you."

I shook my head, "it's fine. I just wasn't expecting an audience."

"Can I sit?" I nodded giving him permission. He sat down next to me at the butt end of the guitar. "I've heard you singing that song for a while, is it new?"

"Uh yeah, it is. It's-uh, it's inspired by a conversation your mom and I had a couple weeks ago, um, the morning of the volleyball tournament," I said gripping my guitar.

He nodded, "that's nice- the song, and you talking to my mom, it's nice. Mom said she'd do the trial," he smiled.

"You did it, you changed her mind," I returned the smile.

"Nah," He shook his head, "it wasn't me, it was Jere. He did it."

"Well, I'm sure you had a massive part to play too."

I looked at the water lapping against the sand and felt Conrad's gaze on me. He was taking in every feature. He then said, "Abby, I'm sorry I've been a shit friend," which shocked me. I turned my head to look at him as he continued, "not just this summer, but for the last few months."

"You don't need to apologise, you were dealing this big secret. It was eating you from the inside out," I said defending his actions.

"That's not an excuse," he denied, "you're meant to be my best friend, the person I can go to when I'm at my lowest, when I need someone to just listen and be there for me."

"So why didn't you? Why did not come to me about this? I could've given you some kind of comfort," I asked curiously.

He avoided eye contact as he answered, "I don't want to be a burden to you, like I'm dragging you down with my problems-"
