"........,"

Days bled into each other, a monotonous blur since the raw display of emotion in that Derrick had.

He'd become a ghost ever since, studiously avoiding any interaction with me.

Meanwhile, news arrived that Penelope had finally received my letter.

Apparently, it had been with Derrick all along.

Relief washed over me, tempered by the worry etched in the messenger's face – Penelope had woken up after she fainted yet again, four days after I left.

With a sigh, I sank onto the plush king-sized bed, my gaze falling on the mask.

The mask that now seemed to be mine.

Picking it up, I turned it over in my hands, the smooth surface cool against my skin.

"What makes this thing so special?"

I muttered, tracing the intricate design with my fingertip.

Was it the mask itself, or the things it provided?

Did it truly change my appearance that much in Callisto's eyes?

"Where does he even look when he talks to me?"

I grumbled, the question a thorn in my side.

My dic-, never mind.

My frustration threatened to escalate to another territory entirely.

Biting back a retort, I rose and walked towards the ornately framed mirror on the wall.

Standing before it, I wore the mask, the metal cool and familiar against my skin.

Staring at my reflection, I saw no dramatic difference.

The same eyes, the same mischievous glint – how could Callisto be so oblivious?

With a sigh, I peeled the mask off, the real me staring back, a question mark etched on my face.

Now, the reflection staring back at me was a familiar sight.

"........,"

The thick, yet fluffy, disheveled nape-length dark hair framed my face.

Long-ish bangs, the hue of deep black, slightly obscured my violet eyes.

There was an undeniable resemblance to the masked figure, yet undeniably me.

Furrowing my brows, I whispered to my reflection, "Is it truly that difficult to recognize me without the mask?"
