Chapter 13

This was the moment of truth. I closed my eyes as we entered my neighborhood,imagining it just like I left it.

Was I going to freak out or be totally cool? My emotions were throwing me for a loop. I didn't really know what to expect. My heart was racing and my adrenaline started pumping like crazy.

The car stopped.

Did I dare open my eyes?

Slowly, I pulled my hands away.

The house was perfect.

Everything was just as I left it. The door was the same browish color and the house had the same brick walls. It was just like my dream. Now the hard part was going to walk in the house.

What would I find? Now that I saw the outside I was scared of what I would find on the inside.

Wisty came around to my side of the car and opened my door. There were tears in her eyes. I could tell she'd hoped for the best and they were tears of joy.

We both started sobbing. I think we were both in disbelief at the house and the condition.

Jimmy was no where to be seen.

Hadn't he been driving the car? Where was Jimmy? Did he get lost? These questions and more swarmed through my mind. Could he be hurt? I felt so bad because he seemed so kind and we'd taken advantage of that.

Then another thought flashed through my mind. 'What if he'd been Taken?' I would never forgive myself if he had.

Taken is what we call people who have fallen under McLachlan's spell. They see all those crazy laws and posters and all of the sudden, thier minds just overload. They shut themselves down.

McLachlan used that to her advantage. She spread a substance into all the road pavers and then she ordered all the roads in the country be re-paved.

That substance is a smell and people who shut themselves down and then they smell the substance, turn into the living dead. They are alive but only just. They can't live a normal life like us humans can, those who remain.

The substance doesn't affect the living. They breathe it in and out like it was air. Something strange happens when your body shuts down. It loses control and the first scent it smells is the one it obeys and yet is forever afraid of.

That is why when people are born in hospitals, they usually obey the doctors orders and yet they hate going to the doctor's office.

I would kill myself if Jimmy got Taken.
