Chapter 7

Wisty and I were walking around the train car and we noticed something.
We were the only people our age here. No one in the car looked under 30. That was strange. Last time I rode on a train I met Wisty. I thought people my age liked riding on trains. Mabey that was just me.
We began to head back to our car when something strange caught my eye. An old woman wearing a popular necklace, amoung the higher class teens. It was odd. I thought only teenagers liked those.
I could be wrong but my insticts kicked in and I decided to question her about it. I began to walk over to the woman. Suddenly she got up and headed towards the back of the car and walked into the bathroom.
Did I do that or did she even notice I was coming towards her? Wisty stood slightly behind me looking confused.
I quickly explained what I was doing and what my theory was about the woman, all the while keeping my eye on that bathroom in case she came out.
After about 15 minutes, I gave up. She wasn't coming out anytime soon. I did decide to periodically check this traincar so we could keep tabs on that strange lady.
We headed back towards our traincar. Jimmy was sitting there reading the newspaper. He glanced up at us as we entered.
We took our seats and I constantly was looking over Jimmy's shoulder into the other traincar. I could have sworn I saw the woman walk past the door.
I muttered something about going to use the bathroom and I walked into the other compartment. I spotted the woman sitting with what appeared to be one of her friends.
They were deep in conversation about something. I couldn't make it out without looking obvious. I surveyed the traincar and when I turned my head back towards where the woman was sitting, our eyes met.
WHOOSH
Instantly I was transported to an old fashioned malt shop. It was a reproduction of one that used to be here in the 1920's. Or at least that's what the sign beside the counter said.
I saw the woman as she was when she was a teenager. She was sitting at a booth with her friends and a group of guys walked over to them. I couldn't hear the exact conversation but appearently they were invited to join the lady and her friends.
I quietly took the booth behind them and tried not to look like I was listening. I could hear snatches of things that must have been going on at a school. I heard something about the football team at Jamestown Junior High.
Soon the big bunch of them walked outside to the parking lot. They all broke off and went thier seperate ways.
Suddenly I saw it from the woman's point of view. I was picking up a stray cat off the parking lot and seeing if it had a collar or something to identify it.
Nothing. There was no chip or a clipped ear or a collar. Nothing. I knew that right then and there this would be my best friend. I put the cat in the car and drove away, thinking about what my mother would say.
"Really Elizabeth, bringing a random stray cat off the streets into our lovely home?? Why would you do that?"
Yep those were her exact words. I could tell she wasn't going to like it but I would get this cat a home if it killed me.
Suddenly I was back beside the woman. I could see a fierce determination and passion in her eyes and knew that she wasn't going to give up without a fight.
WHOOSH
I was instantly back in the traincar. Was that what I thought it was? I guessed Elizabeth was the old woman's name, but how was she going to react if she knew that I already knew that? I wasn't supposed to know that. I was sure in for a treat.
