When Harper Hayes moved to Hawkins Indiana, she thought she would never see her old best friend Max Mayfield again. Well, she was wrong. About two years after the Hayes family moved to Hawkins, Max, her mum, step dad and step brother also moved to the small town in Indiana. When Harper left California, things between the two girls weren't the greatest. So when Max first joined Harper's group of friends, the younger Hayes girl wasn't the happiest. But before long, the two girls were just as close as they use to be. But something was different. At least for Harper it was.
When Max and Lucas started dating, Harper couldn't help the pang of jealousy that erupted in her chest. Harper had never felt it before. She wasn't one to get jealous. She knew she could go to anyone in the group, because the news of her jealously of the pair would soon get back to the source of it. She could go to her older sister Blakeley, but she was so busy keeping them safe from whatever alternate dimension monster they were fighting at the time, she didn't want to put anything more onto her shoulders. She could go to her sister boyfriend, Steve, who had become like a brother to her, but then she didn't want to risk her sister finding out she went to Steve instead of her. So she opted for being completely silent about what she was feeling.

The group were in the creel house looking for any clues on Vecna. They all had their own partners to search around the house with. Of course Blakeley and Steve were together, Nancy and Robin were a pair, Max and Lucas were a pair, which meant Harper and Dustin were a pair. Which Harper didn't mind at all, because if she was to be honest Dustin was the person she was closest with, other then Eleven and Max. While Dustin was looking for clues, Harper couldn't help but watch Max and Lucas who were laughing together at the opposite side of the room. "When are you going to tell him?" Dustin asks, causing Harper to turn and look at him. "When am I going to tell who what?" Harper asks. "When are you going to tell Lucas you like him?" Dustin asks. "I do not like Lucas. He's like a brother to me." Harper says. "Then it must be Max you like, because you wouldn't be staring at them like that if you didn't." Dustin says. "Staring at them like what?" Harper asks. "Like your jealous." Dustin says. "I'm not jealous of them." Harper tells him. "Come on, Harps. You can talk to me." Dustin tells her. "I would never judge you." "Dustin, can we please not do this?" Harper asks, with a sigh. "I want to be there for you, Harps, but I can't if you won't tell me whats going on." Dustin tells her. "We've already got enough going on." Harper says, going to walk away from Dustin. "Doesn't mean you should hide how you are feeling." Dustin tells her. "I don't know how I'm feeling, Dustin. So can we please just leave it?" Harper asks. "Harper." Dustin tries. "Please." Harper says, before walking away. Harper knew exactly what she felt. She was crushing on Max Mayfield. But she couldn't have her. Not only was it not expected, Max was with Lucas. Harper just hoped that in at least one other universe, they were together.
