the truth is embarassing

Nico

The next morning when I went to breakfast, I spotted Percy right away. I approached him and told him about Will, how he was currently asleep in my dorm and how last night was sort of a shit show for him, and that I was worried.

I didn't tell him about Will's late night, drunken confessions. I didn't know what I was supposed to do with those, except not tell anyone else at least.

"Oh, geez." He said. "I'll take care of it. I'm gonna bring him back to his and Leo's room. Will you unlock your dorm for me?"

I led him back upstairs and used my key to open the room. Will was still laying asleep in the extra bed.

"You shouldn't wake him," I say. "He was up all night... um, crying."

"Are you serious?"

I nodded.

"That's not like him at all. He's been super weird lately; I'm worried about him."

Carefully, quietly, Percy picked him up and carried him into his own room, Leo letting him in.

"Leo," Percy said after we'd all exited the room. "Do you know what's up with him?"

"No?"

Percy scoffed. "Christ, you're so clueless sometimes."

"Don't get mad at me. He's your best friend, too." Leo rolled his eyes.

"Whatever."

"Um, I'll see you guys later," I say, feeling like an intruder.

********

I think Will was avoiding everyone the entire weekend.

He didn't show up to any meals, at least not at the times we all typically went together. He had been MIA all day Saturday, and Leo texted that night saying he'd checked himself out of school. Nobody knew where he went.

I was pretty worried. No one else saw him the night of the party, but I did. He had this look like something awful had happened to him. No one heard how hard he cried that day, but I did. Everything seemed cool with him before. He radiated positivity and sunshine, at least until Friday.

On Monday I didn't see him until English. He dropped into his seat next to me and looked over at me.

"Hey," he said plainly, almost as if everything was normal. But in reality, I could see the anxiety in him. I would know the signs better than anyone.

"Hey. Is everything o—"

"Look, I'm really sorry about the other night. I didn't mean to put you in a weird spot, with having to, like, watch over me and bring me back to school and everything. And also for embarrassing the shit out of myself. I swear I'm not usually like that. So... sorry, again." He scratched the back of his neck, his cheeks going pink.

"It's okay. Don't worry about it. People have done worse."

He frowned. "I guess. But getting blackout drunk at a party and throwing up all over your bathroom was a little wild."

"...blackout? As in, you don't remember anything that happened?"

He wasn't acting like he knew that I knew his secret, but then again he may just be a great actor.

He paused for a second, looking like he might agree. He seemed to change his mind at the last second though, because he says, "no. I mean, I do remember everything that happened. I wish I didn't, but I do. At least... I think I remember everything." His face paled. "Why? Did I say something weird?"
