*three months later

The cool breeze of a summer evening drifted through the open window, casting a gentle sway on the curtains as Dally lay in bed with Lily wrapped in his arms. They had spent the day together, laughing, talking, and enjoying each other's company, but now an unspoken tension hung in the air.

Lily shifted slightly, nestling closer to Dally as she gazed up at him with affection in her eyes. "Dally," she whispered softly, "I love you."

The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning and expectation. Dally's heart skipped a beat, a mix of emotions flooding his mind. He knew he cared deeply for Lily, but the idea of love, of fully committing to someone, scared him in a way he couldn't quite explain.

He pulled back slightly, his expression guarded as he searched for the right words. "Lily, I... I don't know if I can say the same," he admitted hesitantly.

Lily's eyes widened, a flicker of hurt crossing her features before she masked it with a forced smile. "I understand," she said softly, though disappointment tinged her voice.

The silence that followed was heavy with unspoken words and unexpressed feelings. Dally felt a knot form in his chest, a sense of guilt and confusion weighing him down. He wanted to tell Lily that he did love her, in his own way, but the words caught in his throat.

Instead, he turned away, his jaw clenched as he tried to push down the conflicting emotions inside him. Lily's disappointment turned into frustration, her voice taking on a sharper edge.

"You know what, Dally? Forget it," she said, pulling away from him and sitting up in bed. "I don't need to hear something you don't mean."

Dally felt a pang of regret and longing as he watched her, wanting to reach out and pull her back into his arms. But his fear, his inability to express his feelings, held him back.

"Lily, wait," he started, but she cut him off with a shake of her head.

"No, Dally. I'm tired of this. I deserve someone who can love me without hesitation," she said, her voice tinged with sadness as she got out of bed and walked to the door.

Dally remained silent, his mind racing with thoughts and emotions he couldn't fully process. He knew he had hurt Lily, and a part of him regretted not being able to say what she wanted to hear. But another part of him was scared, unsure of how to navigate the complexities of love and commitment.

As Lily left the room, closing the door behind her, Dally lay back in bed, staring up at the ceiling in the dim light. He knew he needed to figure out his own feelings before he could truly be with someone, but the prospect of facing his fears was daunting.

The night stretched on, filled with a heavy silence that echoed the unspoken words and unresolved emotions between Dally and Lily.
