0.5 |from Sabah's hastily written notes: when eavesdropping on a random conversation|

This time it was Auburn whose face heated up. She shook her head, "I have no idea." To prevent him from asking questions, she quickly took a sip of her espresso.

I stifled a laugh as Anthony waited with a hint of a suspicious smile on his face.

"What?" Auburn's violet-blue eyes widened at the thought of telling Anthony my plan as she set down her cup. "Nothing, okay?" she looked at me with a frown, "It's nothing, Tony."

Just like that the subject dropped. An inquisitive silence grew between them at the utterance of the friendly nickname. Watching them closely (and discreetly, I hoped), I could detect the pleasant surprise on his face and the hesitant uncertainty in hers.

"Uh, sorry," she mumbled, "I-"

His grey eyes twinkled, "No problem. I have always wanted a nickname."

"You sure?" she still looked uncertain.

"Yes," he nodded. "Nicknames are the thing to do with friends and I guess we are friends now."

I shook my head at his poorly-veiled offer of friendship.

Auburn smiled in relief, "That we are."

A short pause ensued in which they looked out of the glass panes, following the people who went by with their eyes. A trio walked in noisily and the moment was gone with the tinkles of the wind chimes that swung with the door.

Auburn looked back at Anthony, "So...you've always lived here?"

"Here as in Madrid?" he asked. "No, I just came here a fortnight ago. You?"

"I came here a couple of months ago as must be evident from my lack of Spanish."

"Can't say much about yours seeing my Spanish is miniscule to the point of imaginary."

Auburn laughed and you should have seen how Anthony's face lit up. He listened with a smile as she asked, "What I'm wondering is how is your English so good, Tony?"

"Is it? That's good to know. Its so tough with all these languages. Sometimes I feel like I don't even know what language I'm speaking in," he looked totally stumped while we laughed.
