Fernando Rubio.

He is a bit of a shit, especially as he thinks of himself as something of my caretaker but that's another point. He was here yesterday and I told him about you—

A summer course literature student who irritates me every day by coming here and asking me, what happened next?

It is off-season and he has absolutely nothing to do seeing that most of his friends are holidaying abroad and I love telling a good story. So, I told him a bit about you. He is a horrible listener, you should know this beforehand.

It wasn't a surprise to me then when he got up half-way and told me he doesn't believe a word of what I was saying. He thinks you're a figment of my imagination! He found it very funny too.

I really wonder at knowing someone like him but then that was Anthony's fault. You see lots of things happened after the match and Fernando was one of those but we could skip him—I was going to—as so many other insignificant things and I told him that. He found that funny too.

Except, otherwise, this story is getting over too soon and you haven't even tried my lemon cake yet. Not to mention that introducing him to you builds up such a paradox over his puny argument.

We called him Nando which Auburn said was nearly the name of a restaurant chain but it suited him well. He was impish with his maddening smile and raven black hair. I had a bad feeling about him the second I laid eyes on him but he was Anthony's friend. Of course, Auburn and I knew him from the Madrid matches where he sometimes played as a striker or a midfielder depending on which bigwig was substituted. We also knew him from Anthony's stories.

Nando was the team Joker and he lived for his pranks. We had often laughed over how he had stuck strong glue on the bench causing several players and a coach to be indisposed for a whole practice session or how he had substituted one of the players' shampoo for hair removal cream. These were hilarious antics which sounded funny through stories but meeting him was another thing.

I knew why we were meeting him even though no one said it. Auburn and Anthony weren't going to be around for a week and they thought, seeing what had happened, I need someone to check on me every now and then. So, Nando was assigned the duty of dropping in every day around eleven in the morning. I hated his arrivals and looked forward to the end of his trips.

Ah, I've done it wrong, haven't I? You don't know what happened. I shouldn't have told you all this just yet.

It is all Nando's fault. If he hadn't barged in yesterday, disbelieving me so much, I wouldn't have lost the thread. Sorry, my dear, you might have to cross all that out. It's nonsense. Where were we before I started on this subject?

The match?

Yes, of course, the match. Well, what do you know, we won it!

We also got an invitation through Anthony to dine with the Kroffs to which we politely declined. He wanted us desperately to meet his family but it might have got more to do with actually making his family meet us. He brought it up again and again with the most beseeching of looks and finally, Auburn gave in.

Then, the two of them made me give in. As it happened, we all ended up meeting for lunch which turned out to be one of the most disagreeable lunches I've ever had, not because of the food—that was great—but because of our fantastic company and the fact that I had a fork and knife in hand meant that I had to control myself a lot. And, of course, that other thing. Excuse me, I think I need to pour myself some brandy for this one.
