18. A familiar world

~Athanasia POV~

I paced back and forth in my room, unsure. What had happened? Was it all just a dream? No, it felt too real for that, but what had caused me to be back? And more importantly, are Vanitas and Noé okay? I tossed my hair. Ahh, this is madness! I took a deep breath to calm down and stepped out of my room. Everything would be fine... Hopefully.

Just as I reached the bottom of the stairs I heard voices... Familiar voices. ,,...I still can't believe Athy knows a charmer like you. Let alone be close to him.'' said my best friend Violetta. ,,Haha... Maybe she kept it a secret so as not to worry you...'' laughed... Vanitas. His voice made my blood freeze. Why was he here? How was he here!? I slowly walked back and my room. As long as Violetta was there, I didn't want to go downstairs. I grumbled and went to the window. I opened it to let in the cool morning air and leaned out a little. I could see the city in the distance. ,,I was really back....'' 

I didn't really know how long I had been sitting in front of the window staring out, but I was starting to feel hungry. Somehow I was afraid to go downstairs. I mean, I kissed Vanitas in Gévaudan. That must have changed something. My thoughts were interrupted when I heard my bedroom door open. ,,How long are you going to hide in your room?" Vanitas asked and I flinched. ,,I-I wasn't hiding.'' ,,Of course. That's why you quietly crept back up the stairs,'' he said, amused. Before I could say anything, I felt a hand on my shoulder and I was turned around. What I hadn't expected, however, was that Vanitas' eyes widened. ,,What is it?" I asked cautiously. ,,Your hair...'' ,,What's wrong with it?'' ,,The ends of your hair have turned white.'' I immediately got up and ran into the bathroom next door. 

I really thought Vanitas was kidding me, but when I looked in the mirror I was speechless. He was right. Vanitas followed and looked at me silently. ,,Does it look bad?" I asked, unsure about the whole situation. ,,... No.'' he replied. ,,You hesitated!'' ,,I know that myself! But it really doesn't look bad.'' I buried my face in my hands, wincing in pain. ,,What's wrong!'' I looked down to where a dark blue stain was forming on my T-shirt. Oh right... I had injured myself....

Vanitas had miraculously found the first aid kit in the chaos of my bathroom and tended to my wound. ,,You shouldn't move so abruptly,'' he said as he wrapped the bandage around my side. ,,I know, but this whole situation has left me with no other choice. I mean, we're here in my world and you're here on top of that.'' ,,And Noé," Vanitas added. I immediately turned my head towards him. ,,He's here too?! And alone!'' I asked, shocked. ,,Don't look at me like that. You know how quickly he can disappear. But don't worry, Violetta is looking for him.'' I sighed, the thought of Noé wandering around alone made me feel anxious. ,,I hope she finds him quickly...'' Vanitas patted my head after he finished. ,,What's important now is that you recover.'' I nodded. 

We then went downstairs where I made breakfast in the kitchen. Vanitas, on the other hand, looked around. I couldn't even blame him, there were so many things here that didn't exist in his world. I opted for simple sandwiches and a coffee. Fortunately, I remembered how Vanitas liked his coffee. ,,Here,'' I said and put the plates down. There was a somewhat awkward silence between us. ,,Hey Vanitas...'' ,,Hmm?'' ,,I'm sorry,'' I said, looking down at my hands. ,,What are you apologizing for? You didn't do anything wrong.'' Vanitas said, confused. I shook my head. ,,I should have come back as soon as Dominique disappeared. But instead I followed her on my own, was manipulated and couldn't stop you two from...'' My throat tightened at the thought of feeling controlled. Vanitas put his hand on mine. ,,It's not your fault.'' ,,But...'' ,,No, Athanasia. It's not your fault. You were dragged into this unintentionally.'' Vanitas said firmly. I nodded gratefully. Just like on the date with Vanitas, he had taken me in his arms. 

And just like then, I felt safe. 

Unfortunately, this moment didn't last long, as the front door opened and I heard Noé's worried voice. Just as I got up to check, he was already standing in the doorway and looked at me with relief. ,,Athy!" he almost shouted and came running towards me, only to be stopped by Vanitas. ,,Idiot, she's still hurt.'' Ahh... Now I understood. Noé would probably have hugged me like his pillow at night. Noé apparently took note of Vanitas' words and actually hugged me gently. ,,I'm glad you're okay,'' he wryly said. ,,That's actually my line,'' I smiled.

,,Where's Violetta by the way?'' I asked, as she hadn't turned up. ,,And where have you been? Did you get distracted again?" Vanitas asked, crossing his arms. Noé rubbed his head and looked to the side with an awkward smile. ,,You got distracted again,'' Vantias stated. ,,Before Violetta found me, I was wandering around the city. And you won't believe it, Vanitas, there are so many unknown things here,'' Noé explained, beaming. Of course, his curiosity knew no bounds. ,,And where is Violetta?" I asked. ,,She... had something to do and just brought me here.'' ,,Of course...'' I sighed.

,,Well, let's make the best of it. Welcome to my world, boys,'' I smiled.
