Despite the wolf's cryptic warning, Bailey didn't head home. Not right away, anyway. She lingered in the woods, no longer running or leaping to extraordinary heights.
Wandering aimlessly through the woods, taking comfort in the solitude, Bailey took a long rest as she came across the rather rocky terrain. Leading to cliffs, waterfalls, and who knows what else.
Soon enough, the surrounding shadows melted away as the sky turned into an inky-black mess. Little breaks of light as stars fought to shine, barely a moon to light the way.
Knowing she was out much later than she should be, Bailey reluctantly headed home. Even before the house came into sight, she could hear her frantic mother's voice.
"She's not with Emily. Where is she?"
Joseph was trying to calm his mate, despite how anxious he was feeling. Even from outside, Bailey could feel her parents emotions, fear mixed with anger. She caused that. She was in trouble.
Dammit.
Bailey paused as the backdoor came into sight. Once again, she couldn't help but think about that monster she encountered out here just days ago. Terrifying eyes, unusual spikes along it's horrendous body.
Her parents thought it was just a nightmare, but Bailey still wasn't convinced.
As she lingered near the edge of the woods, in the same spot she first encountered that beast, Bailey couldn't help but glance around anxiously. She had been avoiding the woods at night ever since that day, fearful that creature was still lurking around.
But right now, as she blocked out the sounds of her parents, all she could hear was her own laboured breathing.
As she stood there in the woods, Bailey couldn't help but notice the broken branches that surrounded her. Trees broken, knocked aside as that monster forced itself through as it chased the scared teenager.
I knew it! Bailey thought as she touched a nearby broken branch. Her touch alone was enough to cause the twig to fall to the ground. That creature was real. It had been here. But she knew a few broken twigs, even a tree pulled from the ground, wouldn't be enough to convince her parents.
Knowing she was waiting time outside, with begrudged steps, Bailey headed inside to face her parents.
To say her mum and dad were angry would be an understatement.
It wasn't often Bailey was the wrath of their lectures, but tonight, as her parents spoke about responsibility and setting a good example for Conner, Bailey held her tongue, all the wide making slow progress to the stairs. Once she had the chance, she'd bolt. It'd probably result in another lecture, but it was something she'd risk.
