Upon hearing the news that Ne-Ne was Lilly's older sister Liam went into a state of shock, as he sat there in shock his mind reminisced about Lilly and replayed a memory he had with her.
"Try again." A familiar voice said as another shield made from intertwining vines and tree bark appeared.
She sounds like Lilly but I know Lilly is dead, what's going on?
"Liam..." The voice called out as it began to distort slightly.
"Liam..." It called out again as it began to drop down to resemble another familiar voice.
"LIAM," Ne-Ne yelled out as her hand touched the top of his head.
"I... I'm sorry that I couldn't save her..." Liam said as he took a deep breath trying to hide his emotions that were slowly spilling out.
Ne-Ne looked down for a second but then back at Liam, her hand slowly tilting his head up to look at her.
"Lilly was strong enough that she could have made it out of there safe... Unless she was attacked by Azerteris.
Liam looked into her eyes, his own slowly tearing up as he thought about Lilly.
Why do I have to keep remembering her?
"Death is something that everyone fears..." Ne-Ne said in a quiet tone as she removed her hand from the top of his head.
"Death isn't scary," Liam said as he continued to look into Ne-Ne's eyes.
"It's irreversible though," Ne-Ne said standing up and picking up the staff.
"Yeah..." Liam said looking down.
Liam looked up at Ne-Ne who was standing tall with both hands on her staff and her eyes closed.
"Ne-Ne?" Liam asked as she got up and looked at her.
"Liam..." She said as magic energy began to swirl around herself and the staff.
Liam could see how condensed her magic was compared to his, which finally opened his eyes to how weak he was in this world. He may have been a spirit human but that meant nothing if he wasn't strong enough to show it.
The energy began to swirl more violently as Ne-Ne spoke.
"...As the leader of the Rumbling Water guild, I give you my blessing and my power within the form of this enchanted catalyst." the gem within the staff began to glow as Ne-ne's magic energy flowed into it.
"Are you saying..." Liam reached his hand out to touch the staff curious about the magic it was holding.
"This staff will grant you the abilities, of a catalyst as long as you stay on track to reseal Azerteris, if you ever side with him or give up my magic the enchantment of this staff will immediately disappear," she explained as her eyes opened at the magic within n the air dissipated.
"I..." Liam muttered in complete awe of the scene.
"You may receive the staff now," Ne-Ne said handing him the staff.
His hand wrapped around it, the wood was smooth and had a powerful feeling as he examined it.
The sun began to fall, and with that, they headed back to Erith. During their walk back Ne-Ne talked about her plans to head back to a city called Aquadias, and how she wanted Liam to come with her as she believed he could grow exponentially under her tutelage. Liam thought about it, on one hand, he wanted to learn more and grow both magic-wise and as a person... But he also didn't want you to leave Ariya.
