In the Shattered Skies, there exists four species with intelligence and sentience comparable to humans. These are collectively called vetu, and include atu, bitu, yetu, and notu. "People/person" can be used interchangeably with "vetu" though "vetu" is considered a tad more formal. Inversely, family titles using characters from the language of creation are considered more intimate than their english counterparts: For example, "vedi" is more intimate than "parent".

As a result of the diverse nature of sexes among vetu (see "Biology/Form Of Vetu" section towards the end of the book for details), the concept of gender was never developed in the nations of the Shattered Skies.

Therefore, gendered pronouns and titles do not exist. Third-person singular pronouns are universally "ve" and "ver", with singular "they", "them", and "their" also used occasionally. A glossary is available with singular family titles, their meanings, and many of the names of places and things unique to the world of the shattered skies.
