The following section contains information that is not crucial to the story's plot but may interest those curious about the creatures inhabiting the Shattered Skies.
Notu
Notu are sentient gemstones, classified as non-biological entities. Each notu gem possesses a unique combination of shape, color, and size, ranging from the dimensions of a single nine-volt battery to the size of two nine-volt batteries placed side by side. They weigh approximately the same as these batteries (Note: In the context of the story, batteries have not yet been invented in the Shattered Skies and are mentioned here for reader convenience).
Notu have the ability to use magic to shape malleable substances, creating what is known as their "extended body." This extended body can take on almost any form, as long as it remains within six ingots of the gemstone.
Consciousness in notu beings resides within their gem. Striking a notu gem can stun or incapacitate the notu, the effect varying depending on the force of the strike. A powerful enough strike can shatter the gemstone, killing the notu.
Notu perceive their surroundings through their gem, possessing vision that surpasses that of a Bitu but falls short of an Atu's visual acuity.
Communication for Notu involves vibrating their gem, allowing them to produce sounds. They also receive auditory input through vibrations that reach their gem. Consequently, Notu cannot hear sounds that are quieter than the volume of their own voice. While they can create a wide range of sounds through gem vibrations, their produced sounds tend to have a tinny quality.
Notu lack the senses of smell and taste.
Notu replenish energy through sun exposure. The more intense the sunlight the quicker their energy can replenish. An active Notu residing in a low light environment can burn through all of their energy in a deposit. Once depleted the notu might migrate to someplace sunny to recharge fully within a quarter-deposit of time or require up to a deposit to hibernate in low sunlight, doing nothing, to become charged enough to perform meaningful actions. Notu who deplete their energy in an area with no light will enter into a sort of coma, and if they remain in this state for around three deposits they can die permanently.
Apart from their solar needs, the needs of a notu vary depending on the material it chooses for its extended body. A commonly used material is a special clay that has been chemically treated to retain moisture for longer periods compared to ordinary clay. This clay requires occasional watering to prevent drying out. It is favored due to its low energy maintenance requirements. However, in higher society where energy conservation is less of a concern and the standards for cleanliness are higher, the use of water as a material for the notu's extended body is more popular.
As non-biological entities, notu do not possess biological sex and do not reproduce. It appears that notu simply awaken whenever Ritu requires them to fulfill a specific purpose, awakening in the absence of others.
Yetu
Yetu are a species of giant moth that often resemble a large fur-ball with wings. Their "fur" is comprised of flexible scales, similar to other fuzzy moths. Normally, Yetu weigh between 20 and 30 purses.
The body of a Yetu consists of an ovular shape, approximately the size of an adult human's back which is the same size as an average adult atu or bitu's back. (Note: Humans do not exist in the Shattered Skies; this is merely a point of reference for reader convenience).
Located on the front of their bodies, Yetu have subtle mandibles for eating and drinking. Just behind their mandibles, on the top of their bodies, there is a loose patch of skin that they can vibrate to produce sounds, capable of replicating a wide range of noises with practice.
