"We have done several ECGs, full-body checkup, and blood tests; everything comes normal. It's just high BP which is damaging the patient's heart," Dr. Singh gave details about the patient's case he was transferring to a young yet more qualified doctor.
"Hmm, I went through all the reports you sent me, and it seems to be a normal case of high BP. What about medications?" Dr. Priya, one of the best cardiologists in the city, asked Dr. Singh over the phone call.
"That's where the problem is. We have tried giving her every possible medication available, and nothing works. Every time she comes to us for a regular checkup, her condition is more deteriorated from before," he answered, helplessness quite evident in his yet professional tone.
"In the reports, she also had episodes of sudden BP rise causing unconsciousness," she questioned, flipping over the file pages.
"Yes, they happen, and its frequency is only increasing," he answered, rolling the paperweight on the table.
"Then what's your approach? How do you manage to control them?" she asked, stopping on a particular page and reading details of all the administered drugs.
"Surprisingly, they are controlled by regular BP control injections, in fact, in small doses which is making the patient's case more confusing," he answered.
"Quite surprising, it's the first time I am hearing such a thing. I mean, injections are higher doses of oral medication, so how come a small dose in an injection works, but the oral medication of higher composition doesn't?" she asked with a frown, resting her head on the headrest of her chair.
"I too am clueless. I have talked about the same to several other doctors in the country, and none of them have come across such a thing."
"Are you sure she takes her oral medication?" she put forth the possibility.
"I have asked the same question to her son several times, and his answer is the same: his sister personally looks after everything," he answered, remembering the several instances about the same.
"His sister means the patient's daughter, right? Have you talked to her? What's her take?"
"No, she is actually the patient's brother's daughter, and I never got a chance to speak to her as she never comes along."
"Then, without talking to her, how can you be so sure that she stands there until the patient has gulped down the medication? Maybe the patient never gulps down the medicine and throws it instead," she pointed out the possibility.
"Dr. Priya, what can we do more than trusting our patient and their family? If her son is sure she is taking the medication, then we too have to believe it," he reasoned.
A sigh escaped her lips, "Okay, I will take over the case from here. I have an appointment with Mrs. Kapoor tomorrow; let's see what's the outcome."
"Please feel free to call me in case of any assistance or history."
"Sure, Dr. Singh, thank you."
"Have a great day."
"Same to you," Priya greeted back, disconnecting the call and keeping her phone back on the table.
Resting her head back on the chair, she closed her eyes. The frown on her forehead was back, thinking of every possibility but, to her bad luck, or better say her luck, she couldn't come across any other than the one of not taking the medications regularly.
