The scorching sun beats down on the pavement, casting its warmth in the cold month of January, sending a sense of comfort to Ram, who stood outside his car parked in an open parking space, his eyes fixed at a distance as he awaited his shopping partner for today, Priya.
Impatient, he checks his watch for the tenth time. "Kidhar reh gyi, Dr. Priya?" he murmured to himself, tapping his shoes on the footpath.
' Is she not coming? ' As the thought came to his mind, he immediately opened his phone to check for any message from her. Finding none, he tilted his head back against the car, restless.
' When did he last wait for someone so long? ' .
"Sorry, sorry," a familiar voice reached him as he turned his head in the following direction. There came Priya walking towards him in long, steady steps. "Aram se," he spoke subconsciously as his mind tried to take in her appearance. She looked different; maybe it was the pink kurti she wore, or the little lip gloss she had applied, or maybe it was the kohl that caught his attention as she got closer. ' You are looking beautiful ,' he wanted to say but kept it to himself.
"Sorry, traffic tha," Priya reasoned, taking long breaths to calm her racing heart; she had come running from the place where she had parked her car.
"Koi nahi, main bhi abhi aaya," a complete lie he told Priya, turning back to fetch a bottle of water from the car and passing it to her.
"Chale."
.
.As they entered the jewelry showroom, the sparkles of diamonds and gold caught their attention. Soon, the manager approached them, having prior information.
Exchanging greetings, they reached the counter, where the manager placed several shining diamond, gold, and platinum rings, each better than the other.
Together, they tried on different rings, their eyes meeting in a tender exchange; the tension between them was palpable, a sense of destiny unfolding.
When a certain ring caught Ram's attention—a small white gold ring with a small diamond flower on top—an instant shine came to his eyes as he turned his gaze towards Priya, who, as if on cue, also turned hers towards him. Without a word exchanged, her gaze traveled to the ring, and a small smile appeared on her face.
"This looks perfect," she spoke to the salesman. Given its smaller size, it was perfect for daily wear, its beauty being the cherry on top.
Finalizing it, they looked out for Ram, who went for a simple platinum band.
As they silently awaited the billing procedure, Ram decided to break the ice. "So... done with the engagement dress and everything?"
Priya, who was looking around, turned her gaze towards him. "Ritika is deciding for me," she answered. "Yours?" she questioned.
"Meri bhi Ritika hi kar rahi hai na?" he answered with a frown. "Dr. Priya ko nahi pata."
' Ritika ', Priya frowned internally. "Oh, haan." she spoke as if she forgot ,
' Is Ritika ki bacchi ko to ghar ja ke dekhungi '.Their small talk halted as the manager brought their package.
As they exited the showroom, Ram's eyes fell on a pani-puri stall, awakening his inner foodie. Excited, he turned his gaze towards Priya, but hesitation soon crept in. Sadly, he looked again at the pani-puris, which seemed to be calling him.
' Is awkwardness ke chakkar mein pani-puri nahi chhod sakta '.
"Dr. Priya, pani-puri," he spoke to Priya, who was walking in front, catching her steps.
Raising an eyebrow, Priya turned to look at him, whose eyes were fixed on the stall.
She was in no mood to eat panipuri in such cold weather, but seeing his curiosity and her hesitation, she couldn't deny it either.
"Bhaiya, do plate panipuri," a grinning Ram told the vendor.
As the vendor prepared their plates, Ram couldn't control his excitement, enthusiastically telling him about the ingredients; meanwhile, Priya continued looking at the scene, amused.
As they savored the first bite, sweet, tangy flavors bursting in their mouths; Ram turned towards Priya with a satisfied smile, raising his eyebrow, asking for her opinion.
His grin grew bigger as she nodded with a smile.
He was in the midst of savoring when an interesting scenario crossed his mind. Unable to keep it in, he spoke, "Dr. Priya, imagine aapne kisi patient ko mana kiya ho bahar ka khana aur vo aapko yahan aise dekh le."
Priya stopped chewing altogether, looking around with wide eyes, swallowing only after making sure there was no familiar face.
"Mr. Kapoor, usse better pata hai kya hoga? Koi media wala aapki aise picture click karke social media pe daal de," she spoke with a sarcastic smile, looking at Ram, who was still enjoying her change of expressions.
Finishing the food in his mouth, "Ram Kapoor, the most down-to-earth person ", he spoke dramatically, making a headline box in the air.
"Hehe... very funny," Priya too added dramatically upon seeing her comeback fail, making Ram chuckle.
