Black Mercedes arrived at the alley in the slum. The driver, Matteo, opened his car door and hissed when his black leather shoes stepped on the puddle.
He complains in his heart, why the head of his warehouse asks him to meet here just to show him the new location for the new warehouse for their weapons.
"Ck.." He shakes his shoes to get rid of the mud that sticks.
He has no choice but to take a step down the muddy road. He tries not to hiss while walking toward the man waiting for him.
"Why are you choosing this place?" Matteo asks in a displeased tone.
"Don." The person lowers his head to show respect. He put his right hand on top of his left hand to stop the shaking.
"This is the cheapest and easy to access transport, Don. But if you have any more suggestions, we can comply." He stutters.
"Let's get it done." Matteo scowled and walked forward. He just wants this day to end fast, he is already tired of yesterday's fights and today's flights.
The man who was in charge of the warehouse walked fast and opened the way for him.
The door creaks when it's open, but the condition of the warehouse is not that bad, they just need a little repair. Matteo crouched down and pinched the ground to check the humidity.
"The transportation is easy in here?" Matteo checked again. He feels satisfied with the condition. The humidity is good, the price is very reasonable and they don't have to worry about the suspicion of the authority.
"Yes, Don." The man says, still fidgety while looking outside the door.
"Great work. Finished this soon, our container will come in the next two months." Matteo says and stands up, cleaning his hands and clothes before walking towards the exit.
Before he even arrived at the exit, he could see from the corner of his eyes the man pulled the gun from his coat and aimed at him. With great reflex, Matteo turns his body towards him and pulls his gun to shoot him. The bullet successfully hits his shoulder, while his bullet scratches the warehouse man's face.
"Fuck." The warehouseman shouts. Just as he tries to run, Matteo shoots him again in the legs.
"You have to think twice before betraying me again," Matteo said in a cold dominant tone.
The man laughed at him, he tried to hide his fear by laughing. He knows the first time he agrees to do this he is courting death. But he still owes that man his life for caring for his sister.
"I know my consequences." The man says. The sounds of the tiles screeching can be heard outside the warehouse. He limps toward the exit and breathes in relief when he finds his backup has come.
"But I owe nothing to you." He says and shoots him another bullet that shoots his belly while getting inside the car. Matteo doesn't expect the bullet to be shot deep inside his digestive system.
The men laugh inside the car, feeling so proud because they successfully brought down the most monstrous Don. They even mocked Matteo while spreading gallons of gas around the warehouse and lit the fire. They burned the warehouse and Matteo's car, and left everything behind without checking twice at Matteo's body.
Matteo tries to gain his consciousness. This is not the worst injury he has ever had, but his condition is much worse since he hasn't slept for a while and his body is weak from all the activity, not to add that he has been drunk before going here.
He can't hold himself to coughing while he can feel blood seeping out from his wounds every time he coughs. The fire is starting to spread across the warehouse. He tries his best, dragging his body out of the warehouse. He doesn't want to be died sillily, just because of the fire.
Matteo successfully got out of the burning place, and yet he can't call anybody with his car on flame as well his phone burns down to ashes.
"Merda!" Matteo curses.
He takes his breath for a few seconds and continues to move to search for some telecommunications. Some homeless people and people from the slum watch him with worried eyes and evade him at every step. Matteo knows for sure he can't rely on those types of people, because they know best what kind of person he is. They won't hesitate to let him die on the street just to be saved.
With a little energy left, he sits outside the bookstore, the closest place he can find before he completely blacks out because of lack of blood. Just before he closes his eyes he can see his enemy come back, he waits patiently and pretends to be dead, but he knows for sure he can't escape death this time. The car came close to him, and one of the men got down and tried to shake him awake with his foot. The warehouse man who is already shot, asks his friend to get back and leave Matteo alone, he doesn't want to be captured alive by the Sicily mafia. After all, even if the Don is dead the rest of the mafia will kill him when they know that he is the one who killed the previous Don. The man shoots him once again near his heart gets back to the car and smiles satisfied knowing that this time Don is dead.
Lucky for Matteo the last bullet nest on his liontin. After making sure the enemy was gone, he opened his eyes. He didn't expect to see a little girl in her early twenties crouching down in front of him. Her hands cup his face and try to wake him up.
"Sir, you need to wake up," Leora says while patting his face lightly.
"Thank you." Matteo says with a hoarse voice.
"What should I do?" Leora asks, her voice is shaking, and tears start to swell from her eyes. She tries her best to stop his bleeding.
"Can you call someone for me?" Matteo says and tries to smile gently to not scare the pretty girl.
"Should I call 911?" She asks tears starting to run from her eyes.
"Type this," Matteo says spelling the number slowly. Leora nodded and tried to type with shaky and bloodied hands. Soon the line connected, and she looked up at him searching for another instruction.
"Just say to pick the Don here, you know the address right?" Leora nods and does what he says.
"Done." She whispers slowly while looking at him with anxious eyes.
"Thanks." He says resting his back fully and closing his eyes. He can rest assured now, that this sweet stranger girl just helped him. He knows that he needs to make sure she doesn't say a word after this, but he will think about this problem for another time. Right now he just waits for his man to come.
"You will be okay." She says softly while putting her hands on his wounds, still trying to stop the bleeding. Matteo open his eyes and look at hers, deep brown eyes that look at him with so much softness and confidence, try to convince him that everything will be okay.
"Everything will be okay, I'll pray for you." She smiles try to convince him. Matteo knows after this night the same smile will haunt him for the rest of his life.
