After that night, only days remained, but to Sanctus and their guitarist, Kettu Kinson, the days passed by quickly, each sunrise and sunset were but punctuations between their practices, pauses between notes, grains in an hourglass. They sat in a circle on the last night before the show, a glass of whiskey in each of their hands.
“To Sanctus.” Jack said.
“To Sanctus.” The others replied, raising their glasses and taking a drink.
“So, Big K, You ready for tomorrow night?” Ben asked, his voice harsh from the burning liquor. “We
“As ready as I will ever be, I suppose.” Kettu replied, staring into the golden brown liquid in his glass. He thought it over, the night that the boys had come over, the night he had perfected his song for Nina, he had called her, and left a message, saying that the backstage pass was reserved in her name, and that she only need pick it up at the front door, but she hadn’t called back. Maybe she wasn’t coming? He thought, Maybe she had found something more worthwhile to do than go see the band. He bit his lip thoughtfully, and looked back at his song. Just who would he be singing to that night? Perhaps no one, perhaps Nina, but in any case, those words, those notes, and those emotions needed to come out, which made Kettu feel uncomfortable, even vulnerable, but with courage and heartfelt ambition, He felt that he could pull it off.
“That’s pansy talk!” Jack shouted, tossing back the rest of his whiskey, “You gotta go in there confident, without fear!” He raised a fist to the sky, “In order to conquer the woman, you must first conquer your own insecurities, my lad!”
Kettu rolled his eyes and shook his head,
“Listen, Jack, I know what I’m doing, I didn’t mean that I was going to be nervous or fearing rejection, it’s just that Nina never called me back saying that she was coming, so I’m kinda worried I’ll be practicing for nothing.”
“She’ll show.” Ben said, leaning back in his chair, “A true coming-out and expressing your love tale never ends with the girl not showing up.”
“Maybe in the movies.” Kettu said, scratching the back of his head, “I just don’t want to end up looking like an idiot up there.”
“When one man is true to himself, he never bestows upon himself the title of fool.” Phil said. The entire band stopped and stared at him, such clarity and wisdom was rare from Phil, actually, it was nonexistent. Phil offered a grin, “I read that on an advertisement on the subway, it fits though, doesn’t it?”
That explained it. Kettu rolled his eyes again.
“I’m doomed.” He said.
“Hey, if she doesn’t show, you can always just tell her when you see her again.” Jack said, pouring a new glass of liquor.
“That’s true, if I’m ready to do it in front of a major crowd, I should be able to do it one-on-one, right?”
“Damned straight, Big K.”
“Well, boys, I think it’s time we pack up, go home, and get some rest, we’re going to need it tomorrow.” Ben said.
And the Band Agreed.
