Jasmine nearly choked on her breath when I revealed, "FIFTY THOUSAND."
"I know, I was just as stunned," I admitted.
As we strolled back to our apartment, she exclaimed, "That's life-changing money! Just imagine."
"I know. He gave me his card, and I have to let him know if I accept," I said, pulling out the card.
"Is the card even expensive?" Jasmine wondered.
Ascending the worn stairs, each creak beneath my weight seemed to echo the unusual events of the day. The jingle of keys reverberated in the quiet hallway as I unlocked the door to my apartment.
"Today was... definitely something," I murmured, my voice carrying a mix of disbelief and wonder.
"Yeah, it was," Jasmine replied, her expression mirroring my sentiment.
In my room, the dim glow of the bedside lamp illuminated the furniture, casting shadows that danced in rhythm with my thoughts. With a sigh, I retrieved my phone from the cluttered desk, the screen casting a soft glow across my face.
"I accept the offer," I typed, my fingers tapping the keys with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. Pressing send, I placed my phone down on the desk, the anticipation lingering in the air.
As the water cascaded in the shower, I let the events of the day swirl around me, the warm streams offering a momentary sanctuary. Droplets trickled down, carrying away the residue of a day that had left me both bewildered and intrigued.
Stepping out of the shower, I reached for my phone, still resting on the desk. The screen illuminated with a notification, and I hesitated for a brief moment before unlocking it to reveal the awaited reply.
"Fantastic. I'll arrange for a car to pick you up next week."
The next day i didn't see the old man
"You know i kinda got used to the old guy"
"Wow didn't even learn his name" Jasmine teases
"I'm being serious, im so use to feeling eyes on the back of my head" i say, as i grabbed a plate from the window and brought it to a table, "here you go, sorry for the wait"
Jasmine and I were engrossed in our conversation when the bell chimed once more. My attention shifted, and I turned my head to witness a tall man clad in a business suit, wearing a scowl, scanning the diner. It was evident he was searching for something.
"Oop, how much you wanna bet he's here for you" Jasmine joked, as she walked off to attend a table.
I sighed and walked up to him but before i could say my usual greeting he cut me off
"Huh, you do look like her, I thought the old man must have had dementia" he says in a cold voice, and rudely.
"Yeah I guess I do, is there something I can help you with?"
"Yes, by now my brother has given you on offer, tomorrow you will be taken by our driver to our home, take the DNA test, and then be sent on your way"
"But your brother said next week"
"Well, change of plans," he declared, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. As he leaned down, I caught a glimpse of his eyes, piercing and intense. "My father hasn't been the same since his first wife died, and I trust you won't mess with his feelings?"
"I won't," I affirmed, feeling the gravity of the unexpected responsibility settle around me like an invisible shroud. The air in the diner seemed charged with tension as the weight of the situation sank in.
"Good then, the car will be here at 8 a.m. sharp," he says as he leaves
Jasmine rushes behind me
"What did he say" she says
"Are you gonna be ok with running this place for three days"
"There's like five people here max on a good day, I'll be fine"
"Alright. I placed the money the old guy gave me in a box in the drawer. Take it if you need it," I said, ensuring she had a backup in case it became necessary.
