After the intense encounter with Stefen, I was finally granted a reprieve, escorted back to my lavish yet confining quarters. As the heavy door clicked shut behind me, I released a shuddering breath, the weight of the day's events crashing down upon me like a tidal wave.
Sinking onto the plush bed, I stared up at the ornate ceiling, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Had I pushed Stefen too far? Would my manipulation of his fragile psyche backfire, putting us all in even greater danger?
A sinking feeling settled in the pit of my stomach, a deep sense of dread that I couldn't quite shake. Something wasn't right.
Sitting up abruptly, I scanned the room, my gaze falling upon the bathroom door.
Of course! The hiding spot!
I rushed into the en-suite, my eyes immediately landing on the empty shampoo bottle tucked behind the towels. I had stashed the burner phone. My heart skipped a beat as I realized it was missing.
No, no, no. This can't be happening.
I leapt from the bed, frantically searching every nook and cranny, tossing pillows and upending drawers in my desperate quest to find the missing device. But it was gone, vanished without a trace.
Panic gripped me, icy tendrils of fear wrapping around my heart. Without that phone, our only lifeline to the outside world, our chances of escape were virtually nonexistent.
How could I have been so careless? So foolish?
Sinking to the floor, I buried my face in my hands, hot tears of frustration and despair stinging my eyes. We were so close, so tantalizingly close to freedom, and now it had all been ripped away in an instant.
The sound of the door opening startled me, and I looked up to see Rosey slipping inside, her expression one of concern.
"Y/N? What's wrong?" she asked, taking in the disarray of the room.
I opened my mouth to speak, but the words caught in my throat, a lump of anguish rendering me momentarily mute.
Rosey's eyes widened as she took in my distressed state. "Oh, honey, don't worry," she soothed, crossing the room to kneel beside me. "I've got it right here."
To my utter disbelief, she reached into her pocket and withdrew the burner phone, holding it out to me like a precious offering.
Relief washed over me in crashing waves, and I snatched the device from her grasp, cradling it against my chest as if it were a lifeline.
"How...?" I managed to choke out, my voice thick with emotion.
Rosey offered me a reassuring smile. "I found it when I was cleaning earlier. I didn't want to risk anyone else discovering it, so I've been using it to update your friend Jasmine on the situation."
Tears of gratitude pricked my eyes as I gazed at this remarkable woman, this unsung hero who had risked everything to keep our hopes alive.
"Thank you," I whispered, pouring every ounce of sincerity into those two simple words. "Thank you for not giving up on us."
Rosey's expression softened, and she reached out to give my hand a gentle squeeze. "We're in this together, remember? No matter what happens, we won't stop fighting until we're all free."
She reached into her pocket and withdrew her own burner phone, a sly grin spreading across her face. "And speaking of not giving up, look what I managed to snag."
My breath caught in my throat as she swiped through a series of photos – images of the father's office, his desk littered with confidential documents and files.
Jackpot.
"Rosey, this is incredible," I breathed, studying the damning evidence before me. "How did you manage this?"
She shrugged nonchalantly. "I may have 'accidentally' spilled some cleaning solution in his office. While he was distracted, I took the opportunity to snap a few pictures."
I couldn't help but laugh, equal parts impressed and amazed by her quick thinking and bravery. "You're a genius, you know that?"
