The morning sun peeked through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the room. I stretched lazily, savoring the last remnants of sleep before the day's responsibilities beckoned. After a hearty breakfast, I made my way down the corridor, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee lingering in the air.
"Time to rise and shine, dear," Rosey's voice called out as she entered the room, her feather duster in hand. "Stefen has summoned you to his office."
I groaned, reluctantly peeling back the covers. "Morning already? Feels like I just fell asleep."
After a hearty breakfast, I made my way down the corridor, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee lingering in the air.
As I approached Stefen's office, I noticed Victoria diligently cleaning the floors just outside the room. Her movements were methodical, the mop gliding across the tiles with practiced ease. The faint scent of lemon-infused cleaner filled the air, a testament to her dedication to maintaining the pristine environment.
With a gentle nod of acknowledgment, I stepped past her and knocked on Stefen's door, ready to face whatever task or challenge awaited me within.
As I settled into the plush chair across from Stefen's desk, our initial exchange followed the usual pleasantries. However, something in his demeanor hinted at an underlying unease, a subtle shift that piqued my curiosity.
What's bothering him?
"I trust you've been well?" Stefen inquired, his fingers steepled before him.
"Quite well, thank you," I responded, mirroring his polite tone. Yet, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was merely a prelude to the true purpose of our meeting.
He seems tense.
This can't be good.
Stefen nodded, his gaze momentarily drifting to the window before returning to me. "I apologize for the abruptness, but there's a rather delicate matter I must discuss with you."
I straightened in my seat, bracing myself for whatever revelation was to come. Here it comes. "Of course. You have my full attention."
Stefen cleared his throat, a flicker of hesitation crossing his features. "It seems our driver has misplaced his phone, and despite our efforts to track it, the device remains elusive."
My heart plummeted, a cold chill running down my spine.
Oh no...this is bad.
Very bad.
The implications of his words were all too clear, and a sense of dread washed over me. Maintaining composure, I managed a measured response,
"I see. That is...concerning."
Understatement of the year.
Stefen's words hung in the air, their weight palpable. As the implications of the missing phone sank in, a flicker of relief washed over me, tempered by the need for utmost caution.
"Ah, yes, the driver's phone," I remarked, feigning nonchalance. "Have you considered the possibility that he might have simply misplaced it?"
Stefen's brow furrowed, his gaze sharpening. "Ordinarily, I would entertain such a notion. However, the lack of any activity or billing records suggests a more concerning scenario."
I nodded slowly, as if pondering his words.
He doesn't suspect the truth.
Not yet.
"I see. And you've attempted to track the device?"
"Of course," Stefen replied, a hint of frustration creeping into his tone. "But it's as if the phone has vanished into thin air. No pings, no trace."
Because it's right here, in my possession. The thought flickered through my mind, but I dared not betray a hint of it on my face. Maintaining a mask of concern, I leaned forward.
"That is indeed troubling. Do you think I broke it?"
"Yes that is possible" Stefen said
For now, the missing phone was safely in my possession, its secrets guarded.
But how long could I maintain this charade?
The weight of the situation pressed down upon me, a constant reminder of the risks I had taken and the potential consequences that loomed.
The day had progressed like any other, the routine tasks and responsibilities occupying my mind. Yet, the undercurrent of tension lingered, a constant reminder of the delicate situation I found myself in.
How much longer can I keep this up?
Little did I know that the fragile equilibrium was about to be shattered.
A frantic knock at the door jolted me from my thoughts. "Come in," I called out, bracing myself for whatever urgency awaited. Please don't let it be what I think it is.
The door flew open, and Rosey burst into the room, her face etched with horror and fear. Her chest heaved, as if she had been running, and her eyes were wide with panic.
"They've found it!" she gasped, her words tumbling out in a breathless rush. "The phone, they've found it!"
My heart plummeted, a cold dread seizing me.
No, no, no!
It can't be.
Forcing a semblance of calm, I met her gaze. "Slow down, Rosey. What are you talking about?"
Rosey gulped, her hands trembling. "Victoria... they found the missing phone on her. Oh, it was a dreadful scene!"
A wave of relief washed over me, swiftly followed by a pang of guilt.
Victoria... she must have taken the fall for me.
The realization was both comforting and deeply unsettling.
She risked everything to protect me.
"But she managed to get it back," Rosey continued, her voice quivering. "She's locked in her quarters, and they are refusing to let her speak to anyone."
I nodded slowly, processing the information.
This buys me some time, but at what cost to Victoria?
The weight of her sacrifice settled heavily upon my shoulders, and I knew I had to act swiftly.
"Thank you for informing me, Rosey," I said, mustering a reassuring tone. "Leave this to me. I'll handle the situation." Somehow.
