Heeeyyy y'all.

How ya beeeen?

I know it's been awhile. I've been going through some things.

There was the new year, a bunch of birthdays, so, so, so much cleaning, a friend moved back in temporarily, a family my family is friends with visited for a couple weeks, I turned a year older, I got sick, I had to start babysitting my nephew more, it's been busy.

I would've said something last chapter but I was UNGODLY tired when I was writing and posting.

This actually wasn't the fanfiction I was originally going to post, but I got some bad writers block for that one and then I discovered Sonic and the Black Knight and I got possessed with the need to write this idea. So this was vaguely inspired by that.

Anyway! let's continue with the book!

Kai has been observing the decor of the castle, and he had noticed the portraits in particular. The portraits definitely looked like him, though, he could definitely notice a few differences.

Like the fact that this version of him was notably less scarred.

And less malnourished.

And more neat and put together.

The same thing went for his sister.

His parents...

He had forgotten what they looked like like this.

They looked decades younger, likely thanks to not having the stress of being kidnapped by Krux and Acronix.

They looked so much younger and healthier and happier.

It kind of made Kai want to cry.

This version of Jay didn't seem to notice Kai's inner turmoil.

He simply led the shorter brunette along towards...

Well, Kai assumed a dining room or something, since they were going to breakfast, but he could be wrong about that.

Kai nearly slammed right into Jay when he stopped.

"Here we are, Your Highness."

Jay gestured at the large door they had stopped before.

"Thanks..." Kai said hesitantly.

Jay opened the door and Kai walked in.

He tried not to seem too shocked at the amount of food on the table, since, for whatever version of Kai he was embodying, this should be normal.

"Kai, darling. Have a seat." This version of his mother gestured at a seat.

Kai sat down.

Seeing them in portraits made them look so much better already... Seeing them in real life was another thing entirely.

Kai had to fight back tears of happiness again.

"How are you feeling, my dear? You had quite the time at the ball last night," His mother asked after a moment

"I've... felt better," He responded quietly.

"Oh, my poor boy. I shall get Zane to concoct you a potion to help." His mother grabbed his face and fussed over him for a few moments before giving him a kiss on his temple and letting his face go.

"Eat, darling. It will help."

Kai began hesitantly eating.

As he ate, he observed the way this version of his family members acted.

This Nya had an air of confidence not unlike the Nya from his world.

He could tell from the look in her eyes though that she was very stern.

A very "take no shit" kinda personality. Like his actual sister.

This version of his parents were more reserved, but he could still tell it was his mother that was in charge of the relationship. Even if this version of his father was clearly more self-assured, he was able to tell from the way he looked at his wife that he was completely whipped.

He turned his eyes back down and continued eating in silence.

No matter how nice it was to see his parents so healthy and happy, he had to figure out how to get home. Whatever alternate universe this was, he had nothing to do with it, and should not be here.

He already missed home, and he's barely been here an hour.

He would have to do his best to play along, but that would be hard when he knew next to nothing about this world. Maybe he could fake amnesia?

He hated having to think this much. He hadn't had to think this much in years. Not since he and Nya were still living in the blacksmith shop.

He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't hear his alternate mother(my inner Coraline fan is fighting me right now) trying to get his attention.

It wasn't until this version of Nya shoved him that he was pulled out of his head.

"Nya!" His mother scolded.

"Yes, Mother?" She responded innocently.

"Do not shove your brother like that. You are better than that," His mother sighed.

"Apologies, Mother."

His mother cleared her throat.

"Kai, are you feeling alright? You aren't usually quite this spacy."

Kai stared for a second.

"Uh, yeah. I'm totally fine," He tried to reassure her.

"Are you positive? You have been talking oddly as well."

He nodded.

His mother steeled her expression.

"Do not lie to me. I am your mother and you will tell me the truth."

Kai could feel his resolve crumbling. His mother did not often talk to him or Nya this way, so even if it wasn't actually his mother, it was still absolutely terrifying.

"Kai. I can tell you are unwell. You will tell me what is going on, or so help me..."

Kai had never wanted to disappear so badly.

"I- I admit, I'm not feeling great..."

"Well of course! But that does not explain why you look like a lost puppy. Honestly, you look like you don't even know where you are!"

Kai's eyes darted around nervously. He didn't know how to respond to that.

His mother seemed to take it the wrong way.

"Is... Is that what is happening? Have you lost your memory? Do you not know where you are?" His mother's frustration melted into concern.

"I- I, uh-" He stuttered.

"Oh my! That is what has happened, isn't it! My poor boy! We must take you to Zane at once so he can restore your memory!"

That was easier than he thought. He didn't even have to do anything. For once, he thanked his mother's tendency to jump to conclusions and immediately try to fix said conclusions.

He did his best to keep up as his mother pulled him along to... Somewhere? He doesn't know. Presumably wherever this world's Zane was.

His sister and father trailed after them, their unbothered expression, turned to concern.

Kai did not have the energy for this, First Spinjitzu Master help him. He was going to need it.
