Pretend

I walk the dark empty streets of New York. The moon dancing with the starts as the music fills my ears. My hands clutch my phone tightly as I walk next to an empty alleyway. I could get home faster through that alleyway, but I decide against it as I see a dark masculine figure. I walk past the alleyway and continue on the sidewalk.

An uneasy feeling fills me once I feel someone's presence walking closely behind me. I pause my music and now the only sound filling my ears are my footsteps and another steps of footsteps of someone steadily trailing behind me.

I bring my phone to my face pretending to check my hair on the black screen. At the corner of my eyes I see the same masculine figure from the alleyway. I'm paranoid maybe he's just walking the same direction. The thought passes my mind. But I still decide to walk a little bit faster determined to try and see if he is following me. I cross the street again the figure still trailing behind me.

I look over my shoulder and lock eyes with the figure. I now realize he is 6,0 and has a lot of muscle meaning he can overpower me easily. This makes my heart beat even faster.

I look around scanning the area and I see that all the cafes and shops are now closed and my apartment is 10 minutes away. Who knows what he can do in those 10 minutes.

With shaky hands I feel around in my pockets mentally cursing my self for forgetting my pepper spray.

I turn yet another street then I notice someone standing against there car. Its a feminine figure. Her back is resting against her black car. Her light hair blending with the night stars.

She's wearing a white t-shirt even though its 6 degrees outside. The white t-shirt perfectly contrasted with her beige baggy pants. Her right hands decorated with rings clutching her phone tightly.

For a moment I debate going up to her, but behind me I hear the man come closer and shouting a "Hey!" My heart thumps against my ribcage as I sped up and before I knew it I was in front of the women. With fear in my eyes. Her confused blue eyes meeting mine.

I wrap my arms around her, at first she is surprised by my actions but when I whisper. "Please play along" She securely wraps her arms around my waist, holding me tightly against her warm body.

"What took you so long baby?" She asks. "I-I got lost on the way love." My eyes filling up with tears.

I hear footsteps pass us and a man mumbling curse words under his breath, just then I let go of the unknown women, standing in front of her.

"I'm so sorry" I say breaking the awkward silence between us. "Its okay don't worry about it." She says offering a warm smile. "Was he following you?".

"Yeah he was and he kept getting closer so you know I had to do something." I explain wiping my teary eyes. "Yeah I totally get that." she says. "I can give you a ride home".

"Its okay I live like 5 minutes away." I smile. "Your not bothering me babygirl I was gonna go for a drive anyways." she says pushing her self of her car.

"Are you sure?" I ask. " Yes if that's ok with you." she says a warm smile playing on her face. After more thinking i look at her face and her smile screams safety and her embrace from earlier felt like a safety blanket.

"Ok sure." I smile." After you" She says opening the passenger door and gesturing her hands towards the car. "Thank you." I say entering her car. She closes the car door and goes to the drivers side.

"So what's your name baby?" she asks while taking out her keys from her pockets. " I'm y/n" I smile as she starts the car. "pretty name y/n" She compliments. "Thank you" I say my cheeks turning a shade of pink.

"What's yours?" I ask. "Renee." she flickers her eyes to mine with a smile before focusing on the road again.

"So where am I driving to ?" she says. "next to that famous café on 5th avenue" I say.

"Yes ma'am" She says which makes me giggle.

"Right here we are." Renee says once we arrive. "Thank you." I smile. "Anytime baby.".

I hesitate to reach for the door handle knowing i have to walk through an alleyway. "You want me to come with you y/n?" She asks. "If you don't mind.".

"of course not come on." she says opening her door and walking over to my side opening my door from the outside. With a grateful smile I exit the car the cold air meeting me. "Lead the way." She says closing the door and locking it.

"Okay." I whisper leading the way through the alleyway. As we enter the alley way is notice someone there and my body immediately stiffens and i feel my heart rate increase. "I'm here, its okay y/n" Renee says grabbing my hands and brushing her fingers over my knuckles.

I interlace our fingers together immediately relaxing under her touch.

I lead her to a black staircase and up to my apartment. I open my door my other hand still holding hers. I enter my apartment Renee keeping a respectful distance.

"Thank you so much." I say once more. "Its nothing really." She says with a small laugh. "Is there anything I can do so we can be even?" I asks and Renee smiles shaking her head.

"Orrr maybe I could get your number so I can give you a ride when you need it."

"well I wouldn't mind that." I say a small smirk on my face. "Here you go baby." Renee smirks which is already open to a new contact. I take the phone our hands brushing against each other, i type my phone number and my name before handing her phone back. She does the same from my phone and hands my back my phone with a smile.

"Goodnight Renee." I say.

"Goodnight y/n." She smiles before walking away.
