The early evening light filtered softly through the curtains of Reneé's apartment, casting warm hues across the small living room. It was a cozy space, filled with plants and art, a testament to the life she and Y/N had built together. But lately, the warmth felt like it was slipping through her fingers.
Reneé had noticed the changes in Y/N's demeanor—the fleeting smiles, the moments of silence that stretched longer than they used to. She had tried to help, to encourage her to talk, to share, but Y/N often brushed her off, assuring her that things were getting better. Reneé wanted to believe her.
Tonight, they were supposed to have a movie night, complete with their favorite snacks and a stack of cozy blankets. Reneé busied herself in the kitchen, humming softly to the rhythm of the boiling pasta. She felt a spark of hope; maybe this evening would help bring Y/N back, help her find a piece of herself again.
As the timer chimed, Reneé set the table, her heart light with anticipation. She poured two glasses of sparkling water and grabbed the bowl of popcorn, ready for the moment Y/N would walk in and smile, the way she used to.
But when Y/N entered, the air felt heavy. Her eyes were cast down, and the smile that usually lit up the room was absent. Reneé's heart sank.
"Hey," Y/N murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Hey! I made your favorite," Reneé said, trying to keep her tone upbeat. "I thought we could start with that new movie you wanted to see."
Y/N nodded slowly, but her eyes remained distant. As they settled on the couch, Reneé could feel the gap between them widening. She reached for Y/N's hand, squeezing it gently.
"Are you okay?" Reneé asked, concern etched on her face. "You've seemed... a little off lately."
"I'm fine," Y/N replied, too quickly. But Reneé could see the tremor in her fingers, the way she avoided eye contact.
"Y/N," Reneé pressed softly, "you don't have to pretend with me."
Y/N's breath hitched, and for a moment, Reneé thought she might finally open up. But instead, she withdrew, pulling her hand away and hugging her knees to her chest.
"I just... I can't," Y/N said, her voice trembling. "I thought I was getting better, but... I don't know."
Reneé's heart ached at the sight of her girlfriend, so lost and fragile. "You're not alone in this, Y/N. We can get through it together."
But Y/N shook her head, tears brimming in her eyes. "I don't want to burden you anymore. I feel like I'm just dragging you down."
"Never," Reneé insisted, her voice fierce yet tender. "You're my everything. I want to help you, but you have to let me in."
Y/N's shoulders shook as she tried to hold back the tears, but it was a losing battle. "I don't know how to fix this," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I feel so... empty."
Reneé's heart shattered as she moved closer, wrapping her arms around Y/N, holding her tight. "We'll find a way, I promise. I'm here, no matter what."
But deep down, Y/N felt the darkness creeping in, an insidious whisper that told her she was a burden, that the world would be better without her. As Reneé held her, Y/N fought against the urge to succumb to that voice, but it was a battle she felt she was losing.
Hours passed, and the movie played in the background, but neither of them watched. Reneé held Y/N close, whispering words of love and reassurance, but the weight of Y/N's despair hung heavy in the air.
As the night wore on, Y/N finally pulled away, her eyes glassy and distant. "Reneé... I don't think I can keep fighting."
"Please don't say that," Reneé pleaded, panic rising in her chest. "We can get help. We can find a way through this."
But Y/N shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm so tired, Reneé. I just want the pain to stop."
Reneé's heart sank as she realized the depth of Y/N's struggle. "You're not alone," she whispered, desperation creeping into her voice. "You don't have to face this by yourself."
Y/N looked at her, a mix of sorrow and gratitude in her eyes. "I love you, Reneé. I just... I can't anymore."
Reneé's breath caught in her throat. "No, please—"
But before she could finish, Y/N stood, moving toward the bedroom, her figure retreating into the shadows. Reneé felt a chill creep into her heart. "Y/N, please don't—"
The door clicked shut, and for a moment, the world held its breath. Reneé's heart raced as she knocked gently on the door. "Y/N? Can we talk? Please..."
Silence.
Panic rose within her, and she pushed the door open, her heart pounding. The room was dark, and Y/N sat on the edge of the bed, tears streaming down her face.
"Y/N," Reneé breathed, rushing to her side. "Please, don't do this. I can't lose you. I need you."
Y/N looked up, her eyes filled with pain and longing. "I'm so sorry, Reneé."
In that moment, everything felt still. Reneé's heart raced, fear coursing through her veins. "You don't have to be sorry. Just stay with me. We'll figure it out together."
But Y/N's expression hardened, the resolve deepening in her gaze. "I can't. I can't keep pretending."
Reneé reached for her, desperation clawing at her throat. "You're not pretending! You're fighting. And I'm here, fighting with you."
Y/N's shoulders shook as she whispered, "I can't do this anymore."
The finality in her voice was like a knife, slicing through the air. Reneé's heart shattered as she realized the depth of Y/N's pain.
"Y/N, please don't leave me," she cried, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I love you. You're my whole world."
But Y/N only shook her head, a sad smile ghosting across her lips. "I love you too. I just... I can't stay."
The words hung heavy in the air as Reneé's heart sank, the realization hitting her like a wave. "Please... don't go. We can find help. You're not alone."
But Y/N only looked away, her gaze distant as the shadows swallowed her whole. "I'm so sorry, Reneé."
And with that, the darkness closed in around them, leaving Reneé alone in the silence, her heart shattered into a million pieces. The warmth of the evening had faded, replaced by an unbearable chill.
As she sank to the floor, Reneé felt the weight of the world pressing down on her. The laughter, the love, the light—they all felt so far away now. In that moment, all she could do was hold onto the echoes of Y/N's love, a bittersweet reminder of the life they had shared and the darkness that had taken her away.
The movie flickered in the background, but all Reneé could see were the fractured reflections of the life they had built, now forever changed.
