The plane ride home on Wednesday had been a bit quiet, as Cassidy sat staring out the window. It was over. Her mother was buried, and now she had to return to her life in New York City.
She was so thankful Malachi had been with her. He'd made the entire thing much easier on her. He'd never left her side the entire time, and he'd offered her comfort through their bond, and kept her grounded and from completely falling apart. She wasn't quite sure how she would have handled it if he hadn't been there with her.
Now that she was aware of the werewolf world, she was starting to be able to pick them out. After his discussion with Jude, Malachi had taken her back outside for a few moments to fill her in on some things.
"There are things I can't talk about with you here, Cass. I want you to be aware of that. It has absolutely nothing to do with you, and I'm not trying to keep it from you. It's just that Jude is in that house, and if he focuses on us, he can hear everything we're saying," he explained. "Some things he doesn't need to know since we're not in the same pack."
She'd been a bit shocked by that. She'd picked up on the fact that Malachi could hear much better than she could; she just hadn't realized how much better. She wondered how much secrecy there was from pack to pack. "I understand."
"Also, there are going to be other werewolves at your mother's wake and funeral. They'll show up to pay their respects because she's the mother of their Luna. So, from here on it, I'm masking my werewolf scent. Any wolf who comes in contact with me will think I'm human. Which also means, anything we say, they can hear as well, so we need to watch our conversation," he said.
She'd wondered why he was choosing to do that, but he hadn't said. But now that she was aware of the werewolf community, she was starting to be able to pick them out. There had been a lot of them at her mom's wake and funeral. They'd been kind to her too, respectful, which she'd appreciated.
She thought it was almost laughable that Malachi thought he could pass as human. He was too beautiful, and too well built, though she supposed there were human men that were that way too. And if he didn't smell like one, they wouldn't know what he really was. She hadn't known, though she also hadn't been aware werewolves existed until he'd told her. She'd just thought he was some hot billionaire playboy with a personal trainer and too much time on his hands. She now knew not all of that was true.
She had asked him if he had a personal trainer at one point, just out of curiosity.
His eyebrow had furrowed at her question. "I guess so?"
She'd frowned back at him. "You guess so?"
"Well, Daniel's Beta trained me when I was growing up, but he does that with everyone. But it's not like I pay him to train me. He's broken my ribs and various other things more than once," he'd said.
She'd cringed at that. This guy wasn't a personal trainer she'd want.
Malachi had stuck close to her side the entire time, not really letting her out of his sight. She was thankful for that, for him being there with her. She was also aware of Jude keeping an eye on her as well, along with Callie. It was interesting how these men behaved. Very interesting.
Malachi and Jude had gotten along quite well after their initial confrontation, talking quite a bit. They'd sat up late every night, playing cards with her father, which Cassidy appreciated. She was going to worry about him once they left, though Jude had reassured her that they would keep a close eye on him.
Now it was Wednesday and they were headed back to New York City. Back to reality and she could put her focus more on Malachi now. She still had to figure out her apartment situation too. It wasn't something she had discussed with Malachi at all.
