Cassidy's eyes popped open. The sky stretched out before her, blue and beautiful. She hadn't seen a sky like that in a while. Not in New York City. She lifted her head.
She was laying in a meadow. How the heck had she gotten here? It was wide open and stretched as far as she could see. She started to get up.
'Don't move.'
She stopped and looked around. Ten feet away sat a black wolf. She looked at it for a moment, wondering if it was wild or a werewolf?.
'I'm a werewolf.' The wolf hadn't moved.
She frowned. "Where am I?"
'We're in your dream.'
"Are you talking to me in my head?" She was confused.
'Yes. Don't freak out.'
"You're not Phoenix." Obviously not. She was fairly certain this werewolf was a female.
'No, I'm not. Phoenix is My mate,' the wolf said calmly.
"Phoenix is my mate!" Cassidy protested. Even in her dreams, others were coming after her mate.
'Yes, he belongs to us,' the wolf agreed.
"Us?"
'I'm your wolf, Cassidy.'
"I don't have a wolf." Not yet anyway.
'You do now.'
"How?"
'You almost died.'
What? She frowned, trying to remember. "Candy," she whispered.
'Yes. I'm not sure what all happened. All I can see is your memories,' the wolf said.
She'd almost died? Candy had said she was going to kill her. She remembered Kai telling her that his mother had turned someone to save her life. Was that what had happened? "Is this real?"
'We're inside your mind.'
"That's not at all creepy." These werewolves were strange.
'I wanted to meet you before you wake up.'
"So Malachi turned me?"
'I don't know. I can see what you remember, but there's some blank spots right before I came to you,' the wolf explained
"And you know I almost died." She could remember Candy's claws.
'Yes.'
Cassidy stared at her for a long moment. This was her wolf. The creature who would be with her for the rest of her life. "Do you have a name ?"
'Chloe.'
She liked it. Somehow it fit her. "It's a beautiful name. You're a beautiful wolf."
'Thank you. I'm excited for this.'
"So where are we now? I mean what's happening?" She found herself wanting to see Malachi.
'You're going to wake up here shortly and be ready to shift into a wolf. We're with mate. I'm not sure where.'
Malachi. If she'd almost died.. she couldn't imagine how much that must have affected him. "Is he okay?"
'He's sleeping.'
Cassidy was glad for that. Apparently he felt she was safe enough that he was asleep. She laid her head back down, feeling a bit overwhelmed. Candy had tried to kill her and now she was a werewolf. She looked up to see Chloe standing over her. The large wolf laid down next to her resting her head on Cassidy's stomach.
