i: the games
✧
FOR A FEW DAYS NOW, the audience in the Capitol—the ruling power of Panem, which comprised 12 districts—had been craving blood. During the Hunger Games, 24 tributes had been thrust into an arena to fight to the death. With 16 tributes already eliminated, only 8 remained. However, the Career Tributes faced a significant challenge: Katniss Everdeen. They were determined to eliminate her because she had achieved the highest training score in Hunger Games history, an impressive 11."We need to take down that Everdeen girl and her pathetic little friends!" Cato exclaimed, frustration evident in his voice.
"Well, obviously we do," Clove replied, sounding irritated.
"Then let's track them down."
All the water sources were drying up, as the Capitol aimed to force the tributes together. They were also on the lookout for additional water supplies. The Capitol had increased their odds of survival by allowing two tributes to live, but it felt like hours had passed as they searched for Everdeen, their throats parched. Suddenly, they heard a hissing sound coming from the trees behind them.
"What was that?" Glimmer asked, fear creeping into her voice.
"It's probably nothing. Let's keep moving," Cato said, dismissing her concern.
"No, Cato, we should leave. I can hear it getting closer. The Gamemakers want blood; it's likely one of their traps!" Clove snapped angrily.
Just then, a massive 15-foot scorpion emerged, chasing after them. Its skin was a dark bluish-black, and although its legs appeared small and thin, there were hundreds of them. Clove hurled knives, Glimmer shot arrows, Marvel threw and slashed with his spears, and Cato stabbed and slashed at the scorpion's legs. As they reached the cornucopia, they spotted Everdeen, Mellark, Thresh, Rue, and Finch from District 5, busy with their weapons.
"Get them!" Cato shouted, ignoring the scorpion behind them. "Cato, if we go after them, we'll just die right after! Let's deal with this scorpion first!" Marvel yelled.
As they rushed toward the cornucopia, they inadvertently led the scorpion straight to Katniss and her allies. Chaos erupted as everyone momentarily set aside their differences to focus on the scorpion. "Kill it!" Marvel shouted, but it was futile. Clove struggled to regain her balance, Thresh had a deep gash on his leg, Peeta was still recovering from Cato's earlier attack, and little Rue was at a loss for how to fight.
Cato climbed onto the scorpion's back, attempting to stab its eyes to blind it. Meanwhile, Katniss and Glimmer shot arrows at its legs, and Marvel relentlessly threw spears.
"Why won't this thing give up?" Cato yelled as he hurled his sword. "Everdeen, this is your fault! You should have died long ago, but your pathetic allies had to save you!"
"Cato, now is not the time! We're all fighting this monstrous scorpion!" Clove shouted just as she regained her footing. "Everdeen, just wait. Once we finish with this scorpion, you're next!"
The scorpion, however, showed no signs of injury. Each time they stabbed it, the wounds would close up, and instead of red blood, a shiny, glittery gold liquid poured out.
Just when they thought it was defeated, the scorpion regained its footing and resumed its pursuit of them.
"How fast can this thing run?" Katniss screamed.
"I don't know, Everdeen! Maybe we should just run!" Clove shouted back.
Suddenly, the scorpion jerked to the right, sending Cato flying at an incredible speed.
"Cato!" Marvel cried out in desperation.
"Someone help him!" Glimmer yelled.
But before anyone could react, the scorpion abandoned Cato and turned its attention to Glimmer. In a panic, she did the most instinctive thing—she shot her bow.
Arrow after arrow flew as Glimmer fought back. Cato, now on his feet with two long swords in hand, prepared to strike. "Everdeen, maybe if you help us, we'll spare you!" Clove yelled, throwing a knife at the scorpion's eye.
"Yeah, sure, whatever," Katniss replied, seemingly unfazed.
"No, I'm serious! If you want us to spare your life for a little while, just help us take this thing down!"
"Fine, since the Capitol wants a show," Katniss said, standing up with her bow ready.
Katniss rose to her feet, bow in hand, and began shooting at the creature's tail, but her efforts only fueled its rage. Thresh was busy slashing at its legs and hurling rocks, while Clove clung tightly to its back, stabbing at its eyes and trying to maintain her grip. Glimmer joined Katniss, both of them targeting the tail with their bows. Rue had found a slingshot and was aiming directly at one of its eyes. Cato and Marvel were stabbing at the creature wherever they could, and Peeta was knocked off balance by a swipe of its tail.
Then everything went haywire.
Clove was nearly at the creature's head when it suddenly jerked to the left, sending her tumbling off. "You stupid scorpion! Just watch us take you down!" she shouted in frustration.
But it was too late. The scorpion loomed over her, raising its tail for a final strike. All Clove could see was a blur, and the creature's loud hissing sounded to her like mocking laughter. She realized this was the end.
Suddenly, a glowing bluish light appeared, momentarily stunning the scorpion.
Out of the light emerged eight armored kids.
