Heeseung - December 29th, 2025Monotony. A beautiful way to describe my life, my circumstances. Wake up, work, go to bed. What a life, huh?
"Next."
An elderly woman stepped up to the front counter at a turtle's pace. "I have an appointment for 2:30," she smiled weakly.
"What's your name?" I glanced between her and my computer.
"Elizabeth Williams," she coughed a few times.
"Alright. I have you checked in. Just take a seat over there, please," I pointed to the general seating area.
"Thank you," she slowly headed towards a couch, each step straining against her cane. Then it was back to nearly pure silence, other than the clacking of my keyboard and the light buzzing from the fan a few feet from my computer.
I worked as a receptionist at a doctor's office. Not very exciting, especially lately. It didn't pay all that well, so I had to live with my friend, Jungwon.
Jungwon and I have known each other since elementary school. We've been best friends for years, but lately things have been tense. I've always had to be the peacemaker, but I think I'm starting to lose that touch. I'm not sure how much more I can take.
My shift was supposed to end a half-hour ago, but Chaewon still hasn't shown up. You can count on her to always be late. Usually not this late, however.
"Oh my gosh, Hee, I am soooo sorry," Chaewon slammed her purse onto the desk, which seemed to echo throughout the silent lobby. "Traffic was just horrible today. Huge accident just down the street," she rolled her eyes.
"Yikes," I sighed, not really giving a shit about her excuse as usual. "I'll be leaving, then?"
"Yeah, okay. I've got it," Chaewon forced on a smile as we traded spots. She sat on the creaky chair, quickly logging on to the computer. "Have a good night."
"You too," I muttered, hurriedly grabbing my bag and exiting the office. Towards the back of the parking lot is where my car was located. It was hella old, but it worked. Never broken down either, somehow. I pulled out of the lot and headed home. My apartment was only 10 miles or so away, but in New York, that was at least a half hour. Bare minimum.
I'd managed to space out through most of the arduous journey home. Once I finally got home nearly an hour later, I walked up the stairs and unlocked the front door. There were two people on the couch, which I expected the other person to be Jungwon's 'boyfriend,' Jay. Well, they aren't exactly dating, that's what they say. Which makes no sense since they're obsessed with each other. Jay comes over almost nightly at this point. And I can't stay when he comes because Jungwon is louder than a murder victim when he's having sex. But I also can't afford to move out, so it is what it is.
