Niki - May 4th, 2026
I was drained. I had no desire to do anything, not even to move. I hadn't even realized I'd dozed off on the sofa until there was a loud knock at the door.
It was probably Jake? It was odd how much he cared about my feelings. Shouldn't he hate me?
I stumbled up from the couch and answered the door, met with the face I'd expected. "Hi," Jake sighed, coming in as soon as I'd backed away from the door. "How are you feeling?"
"Uh...fine?" I chuckled, choosing to stand as he slumped down on the sofa, but I did take a few steps closer. "What happened?"
"Well, he got upset with me, of course," Jake shrugged. "I'm not sure if we'll get back together at this point."
A tinge of guilt pierced my jealous heart, making me furrow my brows. "I...I guess I should apologize, huh?"
"Nah," Jake grinned with the shake of his head. "Heeseung did it to himself."
"Maybe, but why are you so upset about it? I mean, didn't you kinda do the same thing to your wife?"
"I didn't marry her because she would become a 'replacement.' I loved her, but we both changed," Jake sighed, the thought of his wife seeming to bring pain into his mind. "I wanted to have a family with her and everything, but..."
I swallowed as he trailed off, and I watched his eyes become more and more strained as he sought an explanation. The more I learned, the more I could understand how Jake justified cheating on her. I suppose he isn't the monster I assumed he was.
"She never loved me back, Niki," Jake shook his head, staring at the ground as if he was just now learning this too. "Heeseung dated you to replace me. He abandoned you as soon as I came back. He used you as a distraction. That's what the difference is," Jake finished with a relieved sigh.
"I don't know," I muttered, "I don't think it started that way, you know? Like, he didn't date me just to forget about you...right?"
"I'm not sure about that," Jake replied shortly, finally looking me back in the eyes as a serious tone filled the room.
It hurt so much, because I knew that Jake was probably right.
"I know my shitty habits didn't help either," I laughed, mostly at my stupid remark, before my face grew cold again. "I feel like a fucking idiot."
I didn't mean to state the last part aloud, but Jake shrugged it off. "I think we all want the same thing though."
"Oh?" I raised my brows at the vague statement. "And what's that?"
"A true meaning...you know?"
