"Sorry, little one, but I'm afraid that I'm not one of your kind," the man said to me in an apologetic tone. "It's a good thing that you're a baby, or I wouldn't be able to do this. I rarely get time to myself around here. There are times when I can't take these off for days."
"Ugh, what am I doing? Talking to a baby that probably doesn't understand a word that I'm saying. You should be glad that you don't understand what I'm talking about. The world is a scary place and not always filled with good people or creatures."
"You stay there while I take care of some business in the next room," he said, entering an adjoining room. He didn't seem like a bad guy, but the way he talked and acted was as if there was something going on in this orphanage that I just couldn't put my finger on.
Later that night, I was brought to the dining hall with Sola and Tully, who were now wearing the same clothes as everyone else. They seemed to like this place a lot, and the other kids seemed to treat them fairly.
And despite my worries, nothing has happened yet. The man was suspicious but didn't seem to be dangerous. Earlier, I saw him get scared by a mere spider. It was actually kind of funny to watch a grown man jump onto his desk the moment he saw a spider.
"Attention everyone!" The man announced from the head of the long table where Sola, Tully, and I sat as well. "I would once again like to welcome these three into our family, even though we don't know how long that they will stay with us. Now without further ado, let's eat!"
Everyone in the dining hall started to eat without a care. Tully feed me some milk while feeding herself, and Sola was busy eating everything that she could get her hands on. The other kids even looked livelier than before. Everything seem perfect...too perfect.
"This is amazing!" Sola yelled. "I can't believe that we can eat this good every day!"
"T-t-thank you," Tully said to him. "We-we are very gr-gr-grateful."
"Don't mention it," the man said to them. "I just wish that I could do more for you three. After today, things will be a bit different for the two of you."
"What... do you mean?" Sola asked him, shoving a ton of spaghetti into her mouth.
"Well, for one, you girls will need to start doing chores to help out and start taking a few lessons."
"Lessons, what are those?" Sola asked curious about what lessons were since there wasn't anything like a school in the goblin village. Though what kind of lessons would hey be? Was this a world where school was a common for people, or was it only available for the rich and nobles?
"Lessons are things that you girls need to learn to help you survive in this world," the man gently said to her.
"Okay, what about Illya then?" Sola asked.
"I'm sorry, but since she is still a baby, she won't be able to understand what is being taught to her. She will have to wait until she is older to learn.
"Alright," Sola said, sounding a tad bit disappointed, but she perked up the moment that she saw vanilla frosted cake get brough out.
The rest of the night was actually quite fun. Everyone was having fun and that was all that mattered. Even the man seemed to be happy, well that was at least until when went back to his office.
Once everyone was finished eating and had their fun, they were directed to return to their rooms for the night. On the way back to his office the halls were dark and dim. There were only serval candles out to light the way.
"Now, I know that it would be perfect, but I had one of the other caregivers fetch the old crib from the attic. I'm sorry, but you'll have to deal with it for now since our funds are quite small. That party was way over budget and...."
