The Depths of the Underworld- Eons ago
"W-wait! Don't come any closer!"
Foul, ever-shifting darkness and rot blanketed the wilderness of the underworld. What was once a lush environment was no more, now polluted into an unrecognizable ruin of pulsing, deathly sludge. A profane miasma and stench filled the defiled land. Its origin stood trembling in the center, covered in writhing shadows and rot: a wraithlike goddess in dirtied and tattered, once-pristine robes. She had lost control over the creeping blight long ago, and so, it razed and devoured the underworld around her without restraint, even as she cowered back and begged for it to end.
Yet in the center of the blackened sky and earth...was a shining, unwavering light.
Before the fallen divinity, in the middle of the countless monstrous corpses that had attacked her, stood Lucifer, his attire pristine despite the plague around him. He held Morningstar at his side, though not in a combative position, for the searing light surrounding him and his weapon was more than enough to melt away any shadows. The goddess backed away further, in a mixture of fear, timidness, and reverence, falling backwards by accident as she did. She had never met the angel herself- but all of the heavens knew of his absolute might, and his resolve to purge all darkness using it. There was only one reason he would have come all this way.
"P-please! I didn't want any of this...I...please don't kill me! I'm sorry...I'm so sorry...please..." Izanami's face and voice both quivered in panic, as if she already knew she was about to die. It was a truly sorry sight.
Lucifer regarded her silently, and took a single step forward. His expression remained steely and focused. And then...the greatest of all angels extended his hand.
"You misunderstand, Izanami. If my intention was to end your life...I would have already struck you down."
"Huh? T-then why are you here? I can't come back...not like this...and Izanagi-"
"What Izanagi believes is irrelevant." Izanami jolted a bit, surprised. "Unlike him, I refuse to leave my people behind. Not while they...can still be saved." Regret and resolve both burned in the supreme angel's eyes as he spoke, shadow and flame joined together in mourning. Izanami looked up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes.
"...I...can...be saved? B-but look at me...look at this place...at me...I'm just a monster now...I'm nothing!"
Lucifer closed his eyes briefly. While his wounds had healed long ago, he felt a strange phantom pain where he once had wings. As far apart as two divinities were, the greatest of the heavens and a disgraced, defiled goddess...in the end, he knew they were the same. Chaos had left scars on them that would likely never heal, taking not just their divinity, but the pride they had in their existence. It had taken all that they knew.
But this time, Lucifer swore, it would be different. The blight before him had swallowed far too many before his eyes. He remembered those he fought with, cared for and loved, all reduced to rotting, screaming flesh and uncontrolled shadow. As long as he still breathed, it was his duty to ensure none would fall to it ever again. His atonement for those that had been lost.
