narrative

a few days later.

Caitlin pov

"I would think that you would have plans with Kate," Connor tells me over the phone.

"I don't, we're actually not talking right now," I sigh.

"oh," he pauses, "what happened?"

"we just had a disagreement," I tell him.

"about what?" he asks.

"it's personal stuff," I say. im not telling my boyfriend that my best friend thinks that I just love him platonically.

"well, im your boyfriend so I should know," he says.

"Connor, I don't have to tell you everything," I reply.

"well now I feel like you're keeping things from me," he says.

"its just stuff between me and Kate," I pause, "please just stay out of it."

I hear three beeps indicating that he hung up. great.

I knock on Kate's door. I need to resolve things with her.

I hear footsteps coming towards the door before it swings open.

"Caitlin?" she says confused. "I didn't know you were coming over."

"I just wanted to talk," I tell her.

I take time to fully examine her and realize that something's not normal. she's wearing basketball shorts and a sports bra. her hair is a mess and her lips are pink.

"oh," she says. "one second."

she starts to close the door but I stop her. "do you have a girl in there?"

"uh- y-yeah," she stutters.

"oh," I say. why do I feel like this?

"it's fine I'll talk to her," she says. "she'll understand."

Kate walks back inside her apartment and I hear some talking and shuffling before the door swings open again.

"hey," the short blonde standing in front of me says.

"hi," I respond.

"I've heard so much about you," the girl says, trying to make this less awkward.

I nod unamused.

"im Laura," she holds out a hand.

"cool," I say leaving her hand to not be shaken.

"um- well, im gonna go," she says.

"sounds like a good plan," I say dryly.

the girl walks away and I see Kate standing behind where the girl was.

"what the fuck was that?" she asks.

"what was what?" I ask.

"you were a bitch to her. I literally made her leave so that I could talk to you and you are a bitch to her. I could've just ignored you and had sex with her instead."

"im sorry," I whisper.

"whatever," she says. "come in."

I walk inside her apartment and walk to sit on the couch.

"these past few days have sucked," I say.

"agreed," she replies.

"it's hard not being able to talk to you," I say.

"you could've," she tells me. "I wasn't even mad."

"you weren't?"

"no," she says. "I thought you were mad at me."

"I was for like five minutes," I say.

"then why were you ignoring me?" she asks.

"I thought you were ignoring me," I say.

"wait," she pauses. "so neither of us are actually mad."

"I guess that would be correct," I say.

"shit," she laughs. "if you aren't mad, then what was that shit you just pulled out there?"

"I don't know," I whisper.

"what do you mean you don't know?" she asks.

"I mean I seriously don't know why I did it," I say. "I just got mad for no reason."

"do you just wanna move past this?" she asks.

"yeah, at this point I think that this will just escalate the situation more," I say.

"yup," she says.

"wanna watch ultimatum?" I ask her.

"yeah," she says, grabbing the remote.

Kate pov

although me and Caitlin did technically make up, it's still really awkward. we've been sitting here for twenty minutes without talking. just watching our favorite show.

"do you wanna get food?" Caitlin asks me.

"sure," I reply.

we go outside into the parking lot and get into Caitlin's car. she drives for once in her life.

"where do you wanna go?" she asks.

"steak n shake?" I ask.

"perfect," she smiles.

she starts driving to the restaurant and I turn on the radio. enchanted is playing on the station.

"it was enchanting to meet youuuuuuuuu," Caitlin sings horribly.

"please don't be in love with someone else," I sing with her.

"please don't have somebody waiting on youuuu," she sings.

"THIS NIGHT IS SPARKLING DONT YOU LET IT GO," we scream.

we scream sing the rest of the song. when the song ends we both laugh for a few minutes.

"I've missed you so much," she says.

"I've missed you too," I smile.

"you're my best friend," she says.

best friend.

"you're like my favorite person ever, Kate."

"you're mine too Caitlin," I smile.

"let's promise to talk about things for now on," she says. "no more ignoring each other."

"ok, I promise," I say.

"I promise too," she smiles.

"okay no more depressing shit," I say. "let's listen to more Taylor swift."

"you're definitely my favorite person," Caitlin smiles.
