"I can't believe you're lying," I said, looking at Aunt Lucy in disbelief. We were in the war room, where my parents discussed important matters. Aunt Lucy had told me fairy tales for years, but I couldn't believe them.
"Oh, Jason, I assure you that this event is more than just a fairy tale," Aunt Lucy said with a chuckle. She gestured towards my parents, who were seated nearby, engrossed in paperwork, including letters from neighbouring kingdoms and invitations.
"Before you ask, Lucy is telling the truth," my dad said gruffly, with deep black bags under his eyes. "We received witness reports from neighbouring towns that had seen the fog."
He chuckled and handed me one of the reports. As I read a few lines, I could smell the fresh ink.
"The Duchess of Darkness?" I muttered under my breath, playing with the nickname in my mind. "I find all of this hard to believe."
That memory bounced in my head, as the person in question helped me survive a near-death experience; to say I was a believer at the moment was an understatement.
"Incredible," June whispers, her voice hoarse, her dark eyes roaming her palms wide in shock, before swivelling her sights on me, "We...WE WON!!" Her eyes lit up, like a fire in the darkness, as she roared her thoughts, before bundling over to give me the tightest hug I had ever received, almost knocking me off my feet.
I paused in shock as I stared at my surroundings, The sun berated us from above with its punishing glares almost ecstatic at our impossible victory. The crowd seemed in disgust and overall enjoyment, as it was a partial standing ovation and pure disappointment.
"For good or for bad, I'm never forgetting today." I laughed out, before tapping June on the back, as I watched her hair slowly change from the midnight black to the golden color it was used to.
The colour almost seemed to drip into a different shade, all in a few seconds.
'Now this is more I like it.' CX proclaimed, his words proud as June and I stood in our spots, simply basking in the moment, it was nice in a weird way. It was almost like the world celebrated our near-death call, proud of our accomplishments and hoping to see riskier predicaments sooner or later.
Sadly, with my life, chances say it's probably going to be sooner.
"Breathtaking." A voice said behind me, sadly I only know of one witch.
June separated from me, throwing one of her signature smiles.
"I know right?" She squealed, while I kept my lips thin, "I'm just happy we left in one piece,"
The Witch approached us calmly, her poker face resting perfectly on her features, with the only emotion present being the proud smirk on her face.
"Relax Jason, everything went just as I envisioned it." Her words sounded genuine, as she let her eyes scour our bodies with scrutiny, "No visible marks, except some slight bruising, probably some internal injuries, but you will be fine." It almost sounded like she was reading the words of a book, not a trace of feeling behind those words.
Cold and calculating was very much in character with this woman.
"Mathew, the results please?" She turned towards the announcer, her words coming off more like a demand, than a request.
The man in question seemed to have almost aged five more years in half an hour, as he glanced at her from a distance, visible wrinkles increasing by the second.
A visible glare was thrown at him, before facing the crowd once more:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, the victors of the battle have been decided!!" His words roared across the surface, even waking up our opponents in the process, audible groans could be heard. "The winners of this Gladiator's Duel.."
