NO ONE POV

It was already late in the afternoon and some girls in the auction house were preparing dinner including Anisa.

Anisa sat alone far back in the corner of the kitchen peeling the potatoes and carrots that were given to her.

"Hey mute girl," one of the girls said

Anisa looked up to see Nola staring at her

"You done yet we have to cook it now if we want to have dinner on time," she told her rudely

"Almost," Anisa signed with her hands but she quickly realized she didn't understand her so she held the basket up showing her the vegetables.

Nola signed in irritation

"Just give us the basket, do us a favor, and go back to your room your face disgusts me," she yelled at her like she was a dog.

The other girls in the kitchen snickered.

Anisa felt her eyes well up but held back her tears as she stood up with the basket in her hands walking towards the group of girls.

Nola snatched the basket out of her hands and shooed her away.

As she was walking away she heard them talking about her.

"I don't understand why this bitch is here," she heard Rima say

"I know right she ruins the reputation of the auction house," Nola said

"It irritates me that Mason and Talia let someone like her live here," another girl said

"She should live with those desperate bitches in the fixer houses," one girl added

"She would be too much of a turn off the bitch can't talk let alone moan," Nola said

The group of girls busted into laughter.

Anisa quickly left the kitchen as she felt her eyes well up even more not wanting them to see her cry.

She ran towards her room and quickly closed the door behind her.

Anisa slid down on the ground as she let her tears fall as she silently cried.

Her room wall was vandalized once again seeing all the slurs and death threats made her cry even more.

"Why do I have to be mute, why do I have to be like this why can't I just be normal," these negative thoughts circled inside her head

Anisa wasn't always mute. As a child, she had a really bad speech problem. With every word, she said she stuttered.

Her parents not being the wealthiest couldn't afford speech therapy. This resulted in her being bullied by her peers and her father hating her.

Her father used her as an excuse to let his anger get the best of him. Her mother always tried her best to be positive but deep down did young Anisa know that her mother wished for her to be normal.

Especially after her father came back home with a second wife. Her mother never was able to conceive another child after Anisa was born. Anisa being born with a "problem" resulted in her father favoring his second wife neglecting her and her mother.

Her mother made her not talk at all to not try to embarrass her father any further. After turning fourteen her father sent her away earlier than other girls to Platinum Plaza.

There is where she was taught sign language. She missed the kind teachers and mentors who accepted her for her and didn't make fun of her.

After turning eighteen she had to leave the training center to live in the auction house that's where all the bullying happened again.

The last three years were hell for her. All the girls living here were horrible to her, and she never got picked by a husband candidate as men preferred "a talking wife".

Talia and Mason always reassured her that she would get picked one day. But Anisa doubted that that would ever happen.

Mason was the owner of the auction house the girls lived in. He managed it together with his wife Talia and his assistant Blake.

Done feeling sorry for herself she stood up to clean the mean words off her walls.

An hour passed and Anisa realized the girls didn't call her to join them for dinner. She decides to read a book to fight away her hunger as she sits on her bed.

Completely immersed in reading she didn't notice someone knocking on her door. The door opened revealing Talia.

"Hey pretty girl I missed you at dinner today," she said startling the poor girl.

"Oh sorry I didn't mean to scare you," she said feeling guilty.

"It's okay, I wasn't hungry," Anisa signed.

"You have to eat it's important sweetie," Talia said giving her a look.

Talia and Mason were the only ones in the last three years who took their time to learn sign language to communicate with Anisa.

"I'm sorry I will join dinner tomorrow," Anisa said.

"About that, I came here to tell you some important news I shared during dinner," Talia said cheerfully.

"There will be another auction this weekend, there were enough husband candidates that signed up for an official courting date," Thalia said.

Anisa immediately felt worried. She stopped having any high hopes after everyone she came across over the past three years rejected her.

Seeing the look on her face, Thalia tried to reassure the young girl.

"I know you're worried but believe me when I say this, I have a feeling this time will be a success for you please just please keep an open mind," Thalia rambled.

"Especially now since you're at the desired age and your resume is amazing please have some faith in yourself, don't forget about how beautiful you are and those idiots who didn't choose you before missed out on an amazing wife," Thalia said

Anisa couldn't help but smile a little bit feeling a little bit better.

"There is the beautiful smile I love to see," Thalia said

"I have to get going now but I'll see you this weekend okay," Thalia said

Anisa nodded

Thalia walked towards the young girl she considered her daughter and gave her a warm hug.

Anisa felt Thalia put something into the pocket of her hoodie. Breaking away from the hug she put her hand in her pocket and pulled out a wrapped sandwich and a small milk carton.

"Eat I made the sandwich with love," Thalia said

Dumbfounded about the fact she didn't notice Thalia holding the sandwich or the milk carton she looked at the older woman confused.

Thalia couldn't help but laugh finding her reaction cute.

"I have to go now I have to go tend to my babies back home," she said while blowing her a kiss, and left the room.

Anisa absentmindedly ate the sandwich and began thinking about the weekend.

"Let's try to be positive," she thought to herself.
