Chapter One of Part One

The rest of the day was carried out in silence. The only noise to be heard was the wind rushing past the hobbits or the occasional sniffle from Cody. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying and salty paths lined her face. She would have cried more but she was spent and could cry no more. She thought of all the 'what ifs' but no matter what she did it all ended the same; the orc drew his bow and fired at Boromis.

The dark cloud above their heads dampened their mood even further. It had grown in size and seemed to have gotten darker since it had formed that morning. It made everything have a gloomy feel about it for the sun's rays could not penetrate through it's dirty layers. The very air they breathed seemed to be thick and dirty from the ashen cloud.

As they walked Cody stumbled out of sheer grief and could not take another step. Frodo gently set her on the grassy ground and she laid on her side as a new wave of tears came forth from her. Frodo laid beside her and stroked her hair but did not say any comforting words for words were not appropriate at the time.

When Cody felt as if she couldn't go on one, a pitiful ray of sunshine shone through the cloud and fell upon her grimy face. She looked up and welcomed the warmth it brought to her. For once on the sad journey, since the Fellowship had been broken, she was grateful for the sun. But all too soon the cloud blotted the large star out of existence once again.

Anger filled her body when the coldness swept back over her. She had anger at all the things that had happened; the Darkness, the Ring and the orc who slew Boromis. She had no way to express herself and she was surprised when she heard herself sing.

"I will remember you

Though the time passed by

I won't weep for the loss of you

But for what you could have become

"I can take this darkness over head

But your death is a weight on my shoulders

I know I can continue with you dead

But this shall be a new boulder

"Now, you are in better places

Where there is no pain, no grief, no sorrow

And maybe, I shall see you tomorrow.

"But for now, I should go on

But death has a sting

I shall still weep for you

Until I hear the good bell ring."

All seemed to stand still as she sang her mourning song. The cloud stopped its prowling, the wind stopped blowing and all around went silent as her clear voice brightened the dark world. Frodo had never heard her sing like that before and was taken aback at how much power was behind every word.

"That was beautiful, where did you hear that?" he asked after sometime.

"I don't know," she replied weakly. Frodo's heart broke when he heard the despair fill her voice after she had sang with a powerful voice. He sat up and gently rolled her onto his lap and held her like a child. He rocked her softly until her eyelids became heavy and she nestled close to his body. In only a few moments she was curled up in his arms, fast asleep.

"Mr. Frodo, we really must be going." Sam said when she had fallen asleep.

"Give her a few moments Sam, today has been hard for her. Besides we all need rest." Frodo replied.
