Chapter Eleven

÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷÷

When Cody awoke she cried out as she tried to move her leg, forgetting about the night she killed Garza. With a sickening sound, the bloody scab that had formed over the wound reopened and spilled more blood on the black earth. Frantically, and with fumbling fingers, she panicked and grasped the wound with her bare hands, barley able to get a good grip. As she tried to stop the blood flow her head began to swim and her vision became fuzzy from the lack of blood.

"No! Don't go to sleep Cody!" she told herself, "You go to sleep and you wont wake back up."

With fingers sticky from her blood she threw her cloak off from her shoulders and frantically searched for her sword. When her eyes came upon her right she expelled the remaining contents of her stomach on the fowl ground from the sight she saw. Laying with his eyes wide open and a snarl frozen on his dead face rested Garza. His body still rested in the same place Cody had placed it last night and her sword protruded from the center of his chest where he still had a hold of it, trying to rip it out with his last remaining strength.

Naseaus and weak from her small episode, Cody grabbed her sword and desperately pulled on it until the blade slowly slid out of the black orc's body. Once the blade was removed she snatched her cloak and began the tedious work of cutting off the bottom of it to make herself an improvised tourniquet.

"Please forgive me, Lady Galadriel." she murmured with slurred words as she continued to slice the, once beautiful, piece of cloth.

When she had finished her cutting she dropped her sword by her side and quickly wrapped the cloth once around her thigh, just above the knee. With nimble finger she tied a half knot and held it in place as she searched for a slender stone or a stick she could use to tie on the tourniquet. As she scanned the area she spotted a long, almost rounded stone that would work perfectly for what she needed. When the rock was tied securely in the knot, she twisted it like a cork, making it tight.

"Ah!" she cried as felt the circulation slow in her leg. She watched as the red liquid began to slow its flow until only a trickle came out of the wound.

Once she was done twisting she tied the top of the stone to her thigh with the loose ends of her cloth as to make sure that it would not come untwisted. When she was sure that the tourniquet was secure she tried to stand, only to fall face first into the ground and cry out in pain as dust got into her open wound. With the little strength she had, Cody forced herself to crawl to her bag and dumped the remaining contents out of it. Her lembas bread spilled out of the bottom, still in their leaves, her last remaining pair of clothes slid out of the bag, her water cantine and her elven star.

When the last item rolled out of the bag Cody felt comfort when she saw the small glass vial. "She will shine when you are in need, but she will only do it once." Galadriel's words rang out in her ears. With trembling fingers, the young hobbit girl picked up the encased star and brought it, slowly, to her quavering lips.

"Please, Tumalíer," she whispered onto the star, causing a fog to settle on the crystal vial she was placed in, "I am in need, please, light my way."

She looked down at the small orb and felt tears rush down her face when nothing happened. She let the crystal roll out of her hands and clatter onto the dusty ground where it rolled in circles and then stopped. All hoped had been drained from her heart and Cody shoved her head deep within her hands and let her pain come out.

"Dear one," a voice as crisp and as smooth as chilled wine, "Crying will not get you any closer to the one whom you love."

Cody slowly looked up and was instantly at awe when she saw the creature who stood before her. Dressed in a dress of white flares that danced like grass in the summer winds stood the most beautiful elf Cody had ever seen. Her golden hair was as like a bubbling stream, flowing this way and that as it rippled down her slender back. Her narrow face had a beautiful, unearthly glow to it as if her perfection radiated its own light. Her eyes were the color of liquid gold, sparkling as she stared down at the hobbit.

"It is not my time to shine for you, dear one." the elf explained in her smooth voice.

"Who are you?" Cody asked in awe.

"Do you not recognize me? I am Tumalíer, the elven star that was given unto you by Lady Galadriel of Lothlórien."

"What do you want with me?" Cody quaked when she knew who it was.

"Do not ask silly questions, dear one. I have come because you summonded me."

"You've come to help?"

"I'm afraid not." the elf frowned.

"Then why have you come?" Cody demanded, angry that the elf had come when she asked for her, but refused to help.

"Hush, dear one, I had to when you called, but I can do nothing for this is not your darkest hour. You will not call for me then, but I will know when you need me. I will always be by your side, Codalia Proudfoot, even of you can not hear, nor see me, I will be there."

Like sand in a sand dial, the spirit dissentagrated into millions of pieces and flowed smoothly into the vial where she became a glowing orb once again.

'Go find the one whom you love, Codalia of the Shire.' a soft voice spoke in her head.

With renewed strength, Cody shoved the vial deep within her pocket and searched for the water cantine that had fallen out of her pack. When she found it and had unscrewed the lid she poured the remaining water onto her open wound and used the remains of her cloak to dab away the excess blood, sweat and dirt that had formed over it. She knashed her teeth when the cloth touched the raw skin, but she continued to dab until she saw the pink tissue underneath.

Once her wound was clean she wrapped her cloak around the wound as a way to protect it from the elements and fasted the leaf pin onto it so the ends could not threaten to untie themselves.

When she was satisfied with her work, she gathered her things and the extra food and water that Garza had carried and began her trek towards the ever growing Mount Doom.

"Sam," Frodo managed to croak for his throat was dry and his lips had cracked that morning, causing small amounts of blood to bleed out.

"Yes, Mr. Frodo?" Sam replied, turning towards Frodo.

"Do you think we can rest here for today?" he asked, exhausted.

"But, Mr. Frodo, it isn't even midday yet."

"I know Sam." Frodo whispered and looked out to where they had just come from.

"It's Cody, isn't it?" Sam asked.

Turning back to Sam, Frodo replied in a sorrow filled voice, "I want her to catch up to us, Sam. I need to know that she is well; for her to know that she is not alone."

"Alright, Mr. Frodo." Sam agreed for he knew that he could not talk Frodo out of his decision. "We'll rest here and then begin again in the mornin'."

"Thank you Sam." Frodo barely smiled.

"Just, get your rest Mr. Frodo, you'll need it." Sam reasoned as he checked their supplies for the thousandth time.

Frodo looked over at Sam before he gratefully set his own pack down and rummaged through it. When his hand came upon the cool, crystal of the elven star, he wrapped his grimy fingers around the vial and slowly drew it out. As he looked at it he noticed something out of the corner of his eye, something in the west. At first he thought it was a trick of the lights, but when he squinted he noticed that something was indeed glowing on one of the many cliffs. As he watched his elven star, Earendil, began to pulse light even brighter than before.

Quickly, he snapped his head back towards the west and watched as the light slowly faded and went out; as the white and golden light faded, as did Earendil until it returned to its normal brightness.

'May you stay safe, love,' Frodo prayed silently, 'For me.'
