"Come hobbitses, Sméagol will show the way!" Sméagol urged them on. Several days had passed and the air slowly began to smell foul. With each passing step the air seemed to grow heavier and heavier, with what none of them knew. "Hurry up slow pokes." Sméagol led them to the very edge of the forest and, towering before them, was a hill of loosely packed rocks.
'Come child, you are almost home!' He called to her in her mind. Before she could respond Frodo interrupted her thoughts.
"Cody, are you coming?" he asked. He, Sam and Sméagol had already made it halfway up and were looking down at her.
"Ye- Yes, hold on, I'm coming." she replied and shook her head slightly. She quickly scampered up the rock hill, slipping and sliding, until she stood next to Frodo at the top. Before them laid the evil, smoldering, Black Gates of Mordor. The giant gates swung open and out of no where troops of men marched into the black land.
"Why would they fight for him?" Sam demanded, "Cant they see what he is doing to Middle Earth?"
"Maybe they want power just like him," Cody said without thinking as she stared at the men, "Maybe they believe that Sauron will give them power over the free men and they can do what they please. But, in reality, Sauron has poisoned their minds to do his bidding. He is desperate for more soldiers, the orcs are obviously not cutting it. That, or they are killing each other quicker than the free men are. He knows we are near, he is afraid that he will loose another object that he loves dearly."
"What do you mean 'loose another object he loves?" Frodo asked her and gave her a puzzled expression.
"Not all things were born evil Frodo, you should know this," she said to him with sadness glistening in her eyes, "Sauron used to be called Mairon, before he turned evil. He loved a girl by the name of Aare, but she loved another. He spent a thousand years building the most beautiful tower for her to win over her heart. But she still rejected him. He grew angry and one night he was visited by the Ainur Melkor. Melkor twisted Mairon's heart so it was as black as Mordor, he then swore loyalty to the evil Ainur and thus was given the name Sauron."
"How do you know these things Cody?" Frodo asked in wonder, she seemed so wise but he could not explain it.
"I can sense his feelings, he still longs for Aare even though she passed in battle. He tried to make peace with the free men but went to far and was turned into an enemy. Now, his heart is broken beyond repair, beyond recognition. But, in every broken person, there is a small ray of his former self that wishes for the Ring to be gone. Even though he is trying to stop you from casting it into the fires you will be doing him a favor and end his suffering."
"I guess I had never thought about how Sauron came to be, even the most cruel of people can have a sorrow filled path."
"A broken heart can lead to many things, for Sauron he became the most feared man ever to walk this earth."
"But how does any of this get us into Mordor?" Sam asked, "The gates are right there but the Eye is probably watching them closely. If we try hard enough we may be able to slip by unnoticed."
"But Sméagol knows another way in! We can shows hobbitses, yes, get them past unseen!"
"You're sure you know a way in?" Frodo asked the creature as he jumped around in excitement.
"Yes, yes, we knows a way!" but as he said this one rock tumbled down the hill, triggering more to fall.
"Cover under your cloaks," Cody ordered just as two soldiers stepped out of line and came to investigate.
