Chapter Four

"Frodo," Cody asked as they traveled through the forest that surrounded Mordor, "Who do you suppose the White Wizard and the small prince are?"
"I'm not sure." he replied, "The only white wizard there is, is Sarauman. As for the prince, I'm equally as confused. There are no princes in Middle Earth as far as I know. There isn't even a king in Gondor, all they have is a steward."
"I don't like any of this; an unknown wizard and prince riding a horse of Rohan. None of this makes sense, it's like trying to put three pieces of a puzzle together but they all belong to different puzzles." As Cody thought about the issue an idea came to her, 'What if the young boy was Merry? No, Merry was riding with a soldier on a grey horse not a wizard. Besides, Merry is no prince.'
Darkness slowly fell upon the hobbits and they gratefully set their packs down and rested their sore feet. They did not dare light a fire for they were too close to the Black Lands; for the first time they were forced to eat their lembas bread and sleep without the fire's heat. The night air chilled their bones as they tried to cover with their blankets and cloaks, but all was in vain. Cody and Frodo slept closer together but even their combined body heat did not keep the cold out.
"Frodo." she chattered.
"Yes love?" he whispered. His breathe formed a stream of fog that was blown away by a small breeze. Cody was instantly reminded of the Shire and how all the hobbits loved the good weed that grew in the fertile lands.
"What do you think people will say when we return home?"
"I don't know, they don't know about the Ring so they cant possibly know our whereabouts."
"Will you tell your story to the hobbits like Bilbo did about his adventure."
"I don't think I will," he replied slowly, "They don't need to know about the danger they were in. They are happy and don't need to worry about anything except for what they will be having for supper that evening."
"I don't think they should stay in the dark, you should eventually tell them. Write it in a book and have it published by your grandchildren so you do not have to tell it."
Frodo laughed lightly and a soft gleam appeared in his eyes, "How about my children publish it?"
"Who said we were having multiple children?" she asked. All Frodo did was smile and kissed her forehead before he fell asleep with a sigh.
"Dark hobbitses." a voice called in the dark. Cody quickly closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep as the creature padded up to her. He poked her several times to see if she was awake and waited. She fought the urge to say something to him but remained motionless until he finally gave up and disappeared in the trees.
'A spider's web can be anyone's trap,
A sticky string made by a beast.
One touch and you shall be in its wrap,
But I shall not be that person, at least.' She recited in her head.
'Stop!' Cody cried at Her.
'A spider's web can be Frodo's trap,
A sticky string made by a beast.
One touch and he shall be in its wrap,
But we shall not be him, at least." She chanted over and over until tears ran down Cody's face.
'Please, stop!' she begged.
'Why must I stop? You are the one who is doing it anyways.' She said in a tone like poison.
'I am not doing this, you are!'
'What ever you say.' She replied and vanished.

She sat alone in an old, forgotten tree, the cold night air clung to her like a thin blanket. The moon shone down on the old forest turning the landscape a watery blue. In her hands she clutched a folded piece of yellowed paper. Her heart heart fluttered knowing that when she opened it her love would be drawn on the parchment. With shaking fingers she gently unfolded the paper but nearly dropped it when she saw what was on the parchment.
In her delicate scrawl was a mummified hobbit with only the face visible. Staring back at her was the cold face of Frodo Baggins; his blue eyes looked at her with a small sign of the pain he had endured only moments ago. Dirt and grime covered his once flawless face but was now cold with death.
"I cant let this happen," she told her self in a shaky and heavy voice. But she knew she could not stop what was to come and began to sob uncontrollably in her sacred tree.

Frodo woke early the next morning and shivered as the dew soaked through his clothes and touched his skin. He looked up at the canopy of trees and saw that the sky still contained thousands of stars; not even the sun had woken up yet. Cody laid beside him and she let out small whimpers and tears ran down her sleeping face.
"Hush," he soothed and cradled her closer to him, "It's only a dream, it's only a dream." he knew it was probably much more than just a dream but he rocked her back and forth. He wished they could get to Mount Doom quicker for her sake but they were already traveling as fast as they could.
Cody's crying ceased and her brow unfurrowed as Frodo continuously rocked her. One of her hands slowly reached up until it touched his face as if making sure he was really there. Frodo weakly smiled, grabbed her hand and kissed it before placing it on his chest. Cody leaned in closer and rested her head were he had placed her hand. Frodo gave a small sign and kissed the top of her head before wrapping his arm around her once again.
"There is nothing to fear love, I will always be near you," he whispered gently in her ear, "I promise, I will save you from the darkness that is torturing you."
"Thank you," she sighed. Frodo smiled as she looked up at him with sleepy eyes.
"I love you." he told her.
"I know and I love you too." she replied and fell back asleep with her head resting on his chest. Frodo stroked her hair as he thought about the promise he made. Suddenly, he thought that he would not be able to keep the one promise that meant something to him.
'But I have to if I want to save her.' he told himself and fell into an uneasy sleep.
